About This Role

About the Role

Harrogate College is looking for a dedicated Hairdressing and Barbering Apprenticeship Assessor to join our Apprenticeships department. Reporting to the Deputy Head of Apprenticeships, this role focuses on planning, coordinating, delivering, and assessing theoretical and practical learning for a caseload of apprentices.

In this role, you will deliver training both on and off-site, work closely with local employers to provide tailored training solutions. You will establish Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) with clear milestones, monitor progress, conduct formal progress reviews at least every 12 weeks, and track vocational achievements using e-portfolio systems like OneFile. Additionally, you will support the recruitment and onboarding of new apprentices, participate in quality assurance practice, and deliver constructive feedback to ensure high learner retention and timely completion.

Please note, this is a variable hours contract and working hours will vary depending on caseload demand. Based on current requirements, the role is expected to involve approximately 1-2 days per week, although this may change.

What You Will Do

  • Deliver & Teach: Lead practical and theoretical training sessions for hairdressing and barbering apprentices, covering vocational competencies and supporting Functional Skills both on-site and in workplace salons.

  • Assess & Track: Monitor learner progress against apprenticeship standards using electronic portfolio software (OneFile), mark assignments, provide constructive feedback, and ensure accurate completion of assessment paperwork to audit standards.

  • Plan & Review: Build tailored Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) with clear milestones, conduct formal tripartite progress reviews with apprentices and employers at least every 12 weeks, and ensure off-the-job training commitments are fulfilled.

  • Onboard & Collaborate: Work alongside the recruitment team to recruit, enroll, and sign up new apprentices, perform employer health and safety checks, and foster strong relationships with local salon partners.

  • Maintain Quality: Participate in internal quality assurance (IQA) procedures, uphold safeguarding and PREVENT standards, and actively drive learner retention and timely achievement targets.

About You

  • Qualifications: Level 3 Hairdressing/Barbering qualification, Assessor Award (e.g., CAVA, TAQA, A1), and Level 2 English & Maths (IQA or teaching qualification desirable).

  • Industry & Assessment Experience: Proven background in current salon practices, carrying out workplace assessments, and managing learner portfolios.

  • Employer Relationship Management: Strong track record of networking, building partnerships, and collaborating with local salon employers.

  • Teaching & Autonomy: Ability to plan and deliver practical/theoretical training independently with minimal supervision.

  • Learner Support & Target Focus: Capability to motivate a diverse range of apprentices to hit key completion deadlines and drive retention.

  • Compliance & Values: Commitment to safeguarding, PREVENT, equality and diversity, and high professional standards.
