Maskwacîs Education Schools Commission
Recruiting Institution
View Full School Profile & VacanciesMaskwacîs Education Schools Commission (MESC) is a public education authority serving the Maskwacîs Cree communities in Alberta, Canada.[1][3] Located 70 kilometers south of Edmonton in Treaty No. 6 Territory, MESC operates 11 schools and manages two Head Start programs.[1][3]
Established in 2017 through the amalgamation of four separate education authorities, MESC is owned and operated by Ermineskin Cree Nation, Louis Bull Tribe, Montana First Nation, and Samson Cree Nation.[1][3] The organization was developed based on Maskwacîs Cree values following extensive consultation, research, planning, and negotiations.[1]
MESC's primary mission is improving educational opportunities, services, and student success for all students in its schools.[1] The education system reflects Cree ways of knowing, being, and doing, with governance grounded in Nehiyaw values and the principle of Wâhkôhtowin (kinship and interconnectedness).[2]
The curriculum is Indigenized, embedding Cree culture, language, and traditions throughout its programs with emphasis on Îyinîw Mâmitonehicikan, Nehiyawewin, Nehiyaw Pimâtisôwin, and Wâhkôhtowin.[3] MESC's governance structure includes a Board of Governors, parent advisory committees, and consultation with Maskwacîs Chiefs and Councils, Elders, students, and staff.[1][2] A unique funding model secures 100% of operational funds, significantly increasing total available resources compared to previous arrangements.[1]
