About the School

Alookie School is located in the picturesque hamlet of Pangnirtung, Nunavut, serving the local community. The school educates approximately 200 students in grades K-5 and has a staff of 25. Both the school and the surrounding community are deeply rooted in Inuit cultural heritage.

Required Qualifications

Education & Certification

  • Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree
  • A valid teaching certificate recognized by or eligible for certification in Nunavut (Internationally educated teachers without a Canadian teaching certificate must have their credentials evaluated through Pathways To Teach Canada)

Desired Qualifications

Candidates need not meet every qualification; relevant experience and a commitment to community-centered education are highly valued.

Language and Cultural Assets

  • Proficiency in Inuktitut (both spoken and written)
  • Experience with Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit-based education
  • Background in teaching in bilingual or ESL settings
  • Experience in cross-cultural or northern Canadian teaching environments

Teaching Practice & Classroom Environment

  • Understanding of differentiated instruction and inclusive practices
  • Training or experience in evidence-based literacy development
  • Knowledge of current assessment methods to guide student learning
  • Skills in creating a positive classroom climate with effective management practices (e.g., Restitution, Tribes, Positive Effective Behavior Supports)

Relationships & Student Engagement

  • Demonstrated experience in building respectful relationships with students, families, colleagues, and stakeholders
  • Background in promoting student wellbeing and engagement
  • Engagement with students outside the classroom as appropriate

Collaboration & Professional Practice

  • Experience in collaboratively planning instruction and supporting students
  • Ability to function effectively and supportively in a team environment
