Founded in 1932, we are a distinguished, inclusive British international school catering to students aged 3-18, recognized for our academic excellence. Our current enrollment exceeds 1,200 students from over 60 nationalities. The school is divided into three sections: Primary, Secondary, and Portuguese. The Primary Section serves 480 students across three classes per year. The Secondary Section accommodates 630 students in a four-form entry system. The Portuguese Section includes 140 students from 1º to 9º Ano, with one class per year.
Specific Responsibilities
For a designated group of students:
Lead Provision Development
•
Assess learning support needs from the moment of referral or allocation.
•
Conduct evaluations using standardized, diagnostic, formative, and summative methods.
•
Partner with the Head of Learning Support (HoLS) to coordinate the planning of learning support provisions.
•
Update school information systems with pertinent data for assigned students.
•
Collaborate with teachers to implement learning plans and differentiation strategies.
•
Engage in shadowing and observations as required, providing feedback to subject teachers.
•
Coordinate with HoLS to ensure that appropriate access arrangements are provided for assigned students.
•
Act as the primary contact for inquiries regarding the learning requirements of assigned students.
•
Champion the needs of students within the wider school environment.
Monitor Progress
•
Keep organized records of assessments in line with departmental guidelines.
•
Partake in regular evaluations of support plans to guarantee their effectiveness and relevance.
•
Clearly document student progress in accordance with the school’s reporting procedures.
•
Gather and present feedback (e.g., round robins) at intervals established with HoLS.
Communication
•
Collaborate with relevant subject teachers about the needs and support strategies for students.
•
Lead progress and review meetings with parents, teachers, tutors, and others.
•
Communicate outcomes of meetings to stakeholders.
•
Attend parent evenings and other necessary meetings.
•
Work with and make referrals to other departments or external professionals when appropriate.
•
Maintain consistent communication with HoLS and report any concerns.
•
Ensure all communication is recorded and filed according to departmental procedures.
Responsibilities as a Learning Support Teacher in Mainstream Subject Classrooms
•
Serve as a co-teacher to set classroom expectations, routines, and structures.
•
Collaborate with the classroom teacher to discuss the learning needs and support for students.
•
Jointly develop lesson objectives and assist the teacher with lesson differentiation and resource creation.
•
Provide guidance to teachers from a learning support perspective, including assessments, methodologies, and next steps for support.
•
Exemplify high-quality teaching practices and model support strategies within the classroom.
•
Work with the classroom teacher to ensure appropriate modifications are made for students requiring additional support.
•
Facilitate in-class access arrangements as necessary (e.g., serving as a reader or scribe).
•
Engage in pre-teaching or re-teaching as needed.
•
Assist the teacher in monitoring and assessing students’ progress and achievements.
•
Contribute to report writing and communication with families as appropriate.
Responsibilities as a Learning Support Teacher of Intervention Lessons
•
Assess student needs through appropriate evaluations.
•
Ensure that intervention sessions align with the inclusion statement:
•
Clear entry and exit criteria.
•
Focus on promoting student independence and reintegration into mainstream lessons.
•
Establish timelines for reviews.
•
Design and plan small group and individual support sessions tailored to student needs.
•
Set data-informed learning objectives and communicate these with subject teachers.
•
Maintain high standards for classroom expectations, routines, and structures.
•
Differentiate teaching to meet individual needs.
•
Analyze assessment outcomes to guide future teaching steps.
•
Create suitable resources to enhance student learning.
•
Provide access arrangements or accommodations for exams as needed.
•
Assign and assess homework and independent learning tasks when appropriate.
•
Monitor and evaluate student progress and achievements.
•
Keep all relevant parties informed about students’ targets and progress at agreed intervals, such as through review meetings, bulletins, report writing, and parent evenings.
Additional Departmental Responsibilities
•
Assist in the training and development of subject teachers and other staff members.
•
Conduct relevant assessments, including screenings, specialist assessments, and psycho-educational evaluations as necessary.
•
Engage in departmental data analysis to identify potential needs, underperformance, and areas for development.
•
Support transition processes for students with learning support needs.
•
Assist with external documentation and reports as needed.
•
Offer guidance to parents on how to support their children at home as appropriate.
•
Help with departmental administration as required.
•
Participate in departmental self-reviews and evaluations.
•
Engage in ongoing professional development and training.
•
Stay updated on new initiatives and developments in learning support.
Whole School Responsibilities
•
Familiarize yourself with and adhere to all school policies and procedures, particularly concerning safeguarding, health and safety, and confidentiality.
•
Provide examination invigilation and access arrangements as needed.
•
Cover lessons in accordance with school policy.
•
Perform lunch and break time duties as per school policy.
•
Lead or participate in assemblies and extracurricular activities that align with departmental goals.
