View Full School Profile & Vacancies
School profile St. Julian’s School, established in 1932, is a private co-educational institution that operates as a not-for-profit entity, known for its excellence in academics and extracurricular involvement. Situated on a picturesque 7.6-hectare campus in Carcavelos, positioned between central Lisbon and Cascais, the school comprises three divisions: Primary, Bilingual, and Secondary. Renowned for its exceptional academic standing both within Portugal and internationally, St. Julian’s has evolved into a vibrant learning community, welcoming over 1,200 students from more than 60 nationalities, ranging in age from three to 18. While academic success is a key focus, the school also emphasizes the development of independence, adaptability, enthusiasm for learning, self-discipline, and personal excellence in each student. Since 1998, St. Julian’s has held dual accreditation from the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Additionally, the school is authorized by the IBO to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme to its senior students. St. Julian’s is an Accredited Member of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS), and our Head is affiliated with The Heads' Conference (HMC). For the second consecutive year, Spear's has recognized St. Julian's as one of the top 10 best private schools in Europe. The school is on the verge of launching an ambitious €35 million construction project, which will involve renovating existing facilities and developing new, advanced teaching spaces. At St. Julian’s, children flourish under the guidance of dedicated and enthusiastic educators. The curriculum is tailored to honor the community's Portuguese heritage while embracing the international character of its student population, supplemented by the school's own curriculum development initiatives. From Nursery (ages 3+) through Year 11 (ages 16+), St. Julian’s adheres broadly to the National Curriculum for England. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers the two years of Nursery and Reception, catering to children aged three to five. Following this, students advance through the various Key Stages of the curriculum. The Secondary division aims to foster self-confidence and happiness in each student; learners are encouraged to advocate for themselves in an environment where relationships between teachers and students are positive, engaging, and stimulating. At the conclusion of Key Stage 4, students undertake a series of public examinations (GCSE and IGCSEs). Post age 16, St. Julian’s prepares students for higher education by offering courses that culminate in the International Baccalaureate Diploma. The school consistently achieves impressive outcomes, a testament to the strength, talent, and diligence of its students, as well as the unwavering commitment and care of the faculty. Safeguarding Statement St. Julian’s School is dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to uphold this commitment. Offers of employment will depend on the provision of satisfactory references, verification of relevant qualifications, identification checks, and criminal record screenings, including for overseas backgrounds when relevant. More details can be found in our Safer Recruitment Policy. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement St. Julian’s School is devoted to fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Diversity is a fundamental principle at St. Julian’s, and we are committed to creating and maintaining an inclusive and equitable environment for all students and staff. We believe that every team member contributes to our diversity by providing a wide array of perspectives that enhance our understanding of the world, help identify challenges, and enable the discovery, design, and implementation of effective solutions.
