Role Overview

The Assistant Principal: Head of Academics is tasked with spearheading the school’s academic frameworks, focusing particularly on assessment practices, student performance analytics, academic oversight, and strategic management of subject outcomes. This position guarantees that the school has effective mechanisms in place to monitor, analyze, and respond to student achievement and progression.

Collaborating closely with Heads of Department and the Senior Leadership Team, the Assistant Principal: Head of Academics ensures that academic data is utilized effectively to guide decision-making, identify patterns, and foster improvements in student outcomes throughout the school.

Primary Duties

Academic Oversight


Guide the development and management of the school’s academic monitoring systems.


Establish strong processes to track student achievement and progress across all year levels and subjects.


Examine overall school academic performance data and identify trends, strengths, and areas for development.


Provide strategic oversight of academic outcomes and ensure departments effectively address performance data.


Assist in implementing academic improvement initiatives within departments.

Line Management


Supervise the Heads of English, Mathematics, and Science.


Conduct regular meetings with department leaders to evaluate student outcomes, assessment data, and progress.


Ensure departments effectively utilize assessment information to identify students needing support or challenge.


Offer guidance and assistance to Heads of Department in responding to academic data and enhancing outcomes.

Assessment


Lead the creation and execution of the school’s assessment strategy.


Guarantee consistency and clarity in assessment practices across all departments.


Oversee the design and scheduling of internal assessment cycles.


Ensure assessment data is effectively used to inform academic planning and interventions.


Assist in the preparation and analysis of external examination results.

Data and Reporting


Direct the school’s approach to the collection, analysis, and reporting of academic data.


Ensure accurate and timely reporting of student achievement and progress to students, parents, and leadership.


Generate data reports for the Head of Secondary and the Senior Leadership Team to aid in strategic decision-making.


Monitor performance across subjects, year groups, and key student demographics.

Timetabling


Lead the development and management of the school timetable.


Utilize timetabling software such as Timetabler or other recognized scheduling systems for constructing and managing the school timetable.


Ensure the timetable facilitates curriculum delivery, staff allocation, and optimal use of school resources.


Manage timetable adjustments throughout the academic year as necessary.

Whole School Leadership


Contribute to the strategic leadership of the school as part of the Secondary Leadership Team.


Support the school improvement planning process by analyzing academic performance data.


Collaborate with other senior leaders to ensure academic systems function effectively across the school.


Assist the school in meeting external accountability standards related to academic performance.

Candidate Profile

Essential:


Qualified teacher with a relevant degree and teaching certification.


Experience in middle or senior leadership within an educational setting.


Strong understanding of assessment systems and student performance metrics.


Proven capability to analyze and interpret academic data to drive improvement.


Experience with timetabling software such as Timetabler or similar systems.


Exceptional organizational, analytical, and leadership skills.

Desirable:


Experience in an international school environment.


Background in supporting academic data systems or assessment frameworks.

Compensation

£30,000 - £45,000+ (Regional Equivalent)
