Responsibilities Overview
At GUIS, each staff member plays a crucial role in creating a safe and developmentally appropriate environment that aligns with the program philosophy, school policies, and procedures. The teacher at GUIS is essential in delivering high-quality lessons and supporting both the academic and personal development of students. In keeping with the school’s vision and values, educators are responsible for cultivating a supportive, engaging, and inclusive learning environment that encourages student success, intellectual curiosity, and a love for learning.
Primary Duties:
Child Protection and Wellbeing:
- Ensure the safety, wellbeing, and positive behavior of all individuals involved.
- Follow GUIS's safeguarding and child protection policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
In line with the teaching standards for Middle School, educators are expected to:
- Create and execute well-structured, engaging lessons.
- Adapt teaching strategies to accommodate the unique strengths and needs of each student.
- Assess, monitor, and document student progress, utilizing data-driven methods to enhance teaching and learning.
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and stimulating educational environment that supports all students’ progress.
- Contribute to the development and execution of the school’s curriculum and lesson plans.
- Emphasize the importance of enhancing literacy and oracy in every lesson.
Whole-School Involvement:
- Engage in the development, implementation, and evaluation of school policies, practices, and procedures to uphold the school’s vision and values, particularly focusing on the Social and Emotional Wellbeing of students.
- Participate in the broader life and ethos of the school, including extracurricular activities and events.
- Attend up to six marketing events throughout the academic year as needed.
- Provide coverage for colleagues when requested.
Specific Middle School Responsibilities:
- Teachers are expected to fulfill an average of 22 contact hours per week, which encompasses responsibilities such as classroom instruction, office hours, invigilation, advisory/homeroom duty, intervention classes, enrichment classes, and other related educational activities. The head of School/Division will specify the exact work parameters, but a sample breakdown is provided below for illustrative purposes only and does not reflect the definitive allocation of contact hours for the academic year.
- Teaching load (65 minutes/lesson): Maximum of 6 blocks over two days.
- Office Hour: 2 hours weekly.
- Advisory: Once daily.
- Additional intervention classes, enrichment classes, and related educational activities.
- Additional Duties beyond contact hours include:
- Co-Curricular Activities (CCA): 30 hours per academic year (unpaid).
- Marketing & Admissions days: Up to six unpaid days to assist with marketing events as necessary.
- Parent-Teacher Conferences, Field Trips, and other school-related events.
Required Qualifications, Skills, Experience, and Attributes:
- An internationally recognized teaching qualification.
- Proficiency in the language of instruction.
- Strong subject matter knowledge and curriculum expertise in the relevant subject area(s).
- Ability to design and deliver engaging, well-structured lessons tailored to student needs.
- Effective classroom management skills.
