About This Role
Kipohtakaw Education Centre is a K-12 establishment serving over 300 students, with a strong focus on Cree language and cultural programming. Each classroom is supported by educational assistants, ensuring tailored assistance for each student. Our approach to discipline emphasizes restorative practices, complemented by a committed wellness team, land-based education initiatives, an Elders program, and a distinctive locally developed history curriculum, among various other resources. We also have a Vice Principal for elementary grades and another for junior and senior high.
Located just 40 minutes northwest of Edmonton, Alexander First Nation Education is currently seeking applications for the role of Education Assistant.
Key Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
- Work collaboratively with one or more teachers as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Supervise students in both structured classroom environments and unstructured settings (such as hallways, recess, and lunch)
- Aid in the preparation of instructional materials and perform clerical duties as required
- Utilize effective teaching strategies to assist students with lessons and assignments
- Monitor and report on student behavior and academic development
- Maintain a positive attitude and demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills
- May oversee students during lunch, recess, or field trips
- Engage with parents, ensuring consistent communication and support for school-related activities
- Collaborate with other departments and external organizations as needed
- Assist in the preparation and execution of programs, particularly those emphasizing local content, Cree language, and cultural education
- Participate in additional training focused on supporting students with complex needs
Qualifications:
- Ability to navigate the emotional and mental demands of assisting students with complex needs
- Capable of interacting with students and staff in a respectful and empathetic way
- A positive attitude, along with strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient in following instructions and working independently as well as part of a team
- Attributes such as flexibility, patience, sensitivity, tolerance, enthusiasm, creativity, and imagination
- A minimum of a Grade Twelve education and experience in child-related work
