1. General Information Dukhan English School (DES), established in the early 1950s, stands as one of the longest-serving international schools in the Middle East. The school caters to the educational needs of children whose parents work for QatarEnergy and reside in Dukhan. Dukhan English School Vision OUR VISION is to cultivate high-achieving, healthy, and joyful individuals, ready to embrace their roles as global citizens and future leaders. OUR MISSION is to bring this vision to life through inspiring teaching that prioritizes learning, enjoyment, and the well-being of every student. As a British International School run by QatarEnergy, we emphasize unity, respect, cultural diversity, and understanding. We strive for excellence in education and celebrate achievements. The Dukhan community and our school members are seen as partners, each playing a crucial role in enhancing our students’ education. We are dedicated to fostering a safe, welcoming, and productive learning atmosphere that inspires all students to reach their full potential. Recognizing that learning is a lifelong journey, we create opportunities for students to engage with new information and technologies, enjoy their education, and develop personal responsibility, reflective thinking, creativity, leadership, and teamwork as global citizens. Currently, over 1200 students aged 3 to 18 are enrolled, supported by more than 100 predominantly British-trained teachers and staff. The school is divided into five sections: EYFS, ages 3-5 (PreNursery-Reception) Key Stage 1, ages 5-7 (Years 1-2) Key Stage 2, ages 7-11 (Years 3-6) Key Stage 3, ages 11-14 (Years 7-9) Key Stage 4, ages 14-16 (Years 10-11) Sixth Form, ages 16-18 (Years 12-13) Our academic calendar aligns with the British system, consisting of three terms that commence in September. We observe local religious and Qatar Petroleum holidays. The school week runs from Sunday to Thursday, with Fridays and Saturdays designated as the weekend. The school day for teachers starts at 6:45 AM and concludes around 2:30 PM, barring any additional commitments, CPD sessions, or after-school activities. 2. Students Our student body represents over 50 nationalities. Many of our learners are English language learners and are generally diligent, enthusiastic, and supportive of one another. 3. Parents and Home/School Communication We view the connection between parents and the school as essential. Parental involvement is encouraged through participation in open evenings, parents' meetings, workshops, informal activities, community events, and formal gatherings. Home/School communication books are utilized to track homework, reading assignments, and daily information. 4. School Buildings and Facilities Since its inception in 1954, the school has occupied several locations in Dukhan. Originally situated on the beach, it transitioned into the township and expanded quickly due to increasing enrollment. The campus, while centrally located and spacious, required modernization to align with QatarEnergy's vision for quality education in its oldest and most significant township. Following a nine-month renewal process, the new Primary school opened in September 2018. After moving the Primary section, work commenced on the Secondary school portion. The Primary building accommodates main classrooms designed for 1000 students (5-form entry) and includes a dedicated EYFS unit with ample preschool facilities. Every classroom is equipped with essential utilities and a smartboard to engage learners effectively. The Secondary project has revitalized both teaching spaces and shared sports facilities, creating a coherent master plan to unite our 3-18 school, a cornerstone of the community we serve. Classrooms are bright and spacious, organized by Faculty and providing bases for our four Houses. The school features nine ICT suites, three PE halls, a shaded pool complex with a 16m training pool and a 25m competition pool. An Assembly Hall with a capacity of 1500 serves as an indoor break space and canteen for 800 secondary students, complemented by an 800-seat Auditorium. Outdoors, we have multiple play areas, a 7-a-side Hockey MUGA, and two grass fields. The school is centrally positioned within the town, and we frequently utilize nearby facilities such as the Dukhan Cinema, badminton and squash courts at the JRC, and a full-size grass cricket pitch. The Dukhan Water Sports club, which offers sailing facilities, is a bit further away. 5. Houses The House system fosters school spirit, collaboration, healthy competition, and pride in belonging. It enhances our pastoral system. Upon joining, students and their siblings are assigned to one of four Houses. HOUSE COLOUR Umm Bab Wolves Green Shahania Leopards Yellow Zikreet Stingrays Blue Khattiya Scorpions Red House placements consider prior family associations as well as balanced representation in terms of gender and talents. Heads of House guide both staff and students within each House. 6. Sports Dukhan English School has participated in the Qatar Private Primary and Secondary Schools Sports Association since its establishment in 1999, which now includes twelve schools. We engage in various sports events throughout the year, including football, netball, basketball, swimming, athletics, and cricket, both in Dukhan and Doha. Our students take great pride in these events, consistently receiving praise for their politeness, positive attitude, and sportsmanship. 7. Drama Productions and Concerts Throughout the academic year, we host numerous productions and performances. Students showcase their talents to diverse audiences, including classmates, year groups, Key Stages, the entire school, and families in the Dukhan community. 8. Trips and Visits The curriculum at DES is enriched by a variety of educational experiences. Throughout the year, students have numerous opportunities for excursions connected to their classwork, exploring various local attractions. 9. Extra-Curricular Activities After-school programs offer valuable opportunities to explore new interests, enhance skills beyond the standard curriculum, and forge friendships with peers who share similar hobbies. These activities take place daily after school, ensuring that all students can engage in a club, society, or activity designed to broaden their experiences and knowledge. Students can join activities that align with their academic subjects, such as tennis, badminton, or netball. Creative clubs are also available, including art, drama, and cross stitch. Other options include chess, public speaking, or computer club, as well as unique experiences like the Duke of Edinburgh International Award scheme. All staff members are encouraged to contribute to this program. 10. Summary DES is a dynamic and expanding school that warmly welcomes all students from the QatarEnergy Dukhan Community. With the backing of QatarEnergy, parents, and the broader community, we remain committed to fostering “Unity in Diversity, Trust and Partnership, Learning for Life.”
