About This Role
Smithdon High School are looking to appoint an enthusiastic Learning Mentor to join our English department. The successful candidate would join a team of dedicated and ambitious teachers, focused on continuing to grow the subject both inside and outside of the curriculum.
Start Date: September 2026
Salary: Scale D, Point 6, Salary £13.47/hour approx. £18,044/year
(£25,989 FTE – please note this salary will be pro rata)
Hours: 30 hours/week, 39 weeks/year

Purpose of the Job
To support students in English, specifically those that are showing signs of underperforming and pupils with Special Educational Needs.
You will need to have good communication and interpersonal skills, the belief that all students, regardless of their personal circumstances can excel and the ability to set high expectations in order to motivate and inspire.
Responsibilities, but not limited to:
● Work on a one-to-one basis with students who have missed parts of the curriculum or who have specific weaknesses.
● Work with small groups of students during lesson times to either support their normal English lesson, or extend their understanding of specific topics.
● Work within a classroom supporting the class teacher to help aid pupils' understanding.
● Deliver interventions, for example, handwriting or literacy programmes, such as, Precision Teaching and Read Write Inc. Phonics, and support the completion of English homework, for example, Sparx.
● To plan lessons/ activities/ tutorials and sequences of lessons to meet pupils’ individual learning needs.
● To be accountable for pupil progress and attainment levels in intervention groups and report regularly on the progress of all pupils accessing interventions.
● To assess, monitor and record the progress of pupils in your teaching (and tutorial groups), set well-grounded consistent expectations and give them clear and constructive feedback.

A teacher is expected to demonstrate consistently high standards of personal and professional conduct and uphold public trust in the profession and maintain high standards of ethics and behaviour, within and outside school.
Teachers must have proper and professional regard for the ethos, policies and practices of the school in which they teach, and maintain high standards in their own attendance and punctuality.
Teachers must have an understanding of, and always act within, the statutory frameworks, which set out their professional duties and responsibilities.
