School Overview:

Alookie School caters to students from Kindergarten through Grade 5, with an enrollment of around 215 pupils. The Nunavut Department of Education is committed to promoting staff development through comprehensive professional learning opportunities. Presently, schools in Nunavut are focused on improving literacy outcomes for all students while ensuring that educational experiences are culturally appropriate and respectful.

Required Qualifications:

  • Proficient in both English and Inuktitut
  • Eligibility for a Nunavut Teaching Certificate as a Language Specialist

In the absence of a suitably qualified candidate, this position may be offered as a one-year term under a Letter of Teaching Authority Certification.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Relevant knowledge, training, and experience pertinent to this role
  • Understanding of modern assessment practices
  • Proven skills in differentiated instruction and inclusive education
  • Experience and/or training in classroom management and creating positive learning environments (e.g., Restitution, Tribes, Positive Effective Behavior Supports, etc.)
  • Background in teaching within cross-cultural settings or northern regions
  • Training and/or experience in Balanced Literacy
  • Experience in an ESL teaching context
  • Established ability to build positive relationships with students, colleagues, parents, and other stakeholders
  • Competence in utilizing educational technology, like SMART Boards
  • Skills in lesson planning, thematic units, yearly plans, and student support strategies

Salary:

$78,206 to $94,389
The Northern Allowance for Pangnirtung, Nunavut is $19,077.

Current employees of the Government of Nunavut must hold a valid Nunavut teaching certificate and submit a current Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) prior to the finalization of their appointment. External candidates (those not currently working with the Government of Nunavut) must also provide a current CRC and VSC before their appointment can be finalized.
