ISI Inspection in March 2023 In March 2023, St. Catherine’s underwent an inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate and received the highest rating of “excellent” across all categories: • The quality of pupils’ achievements and their learning, attitudes, and skills • The contribution of curricular and extra-curricular provisions (including beneficial community links) • The effectiveness of teaching • The spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of pupils • The welfare, health, and safety arrangements • The quality of governance • The effectiveness of leadership and management • The quality of relationships with parents, carers, and guardians Academic Programme and Accreditation The school is organized into six stages, in accordance with legal requirements for England and Wales. These stages include: • Foundation Stage - Nursery and Reception (ages 3 – 5 years) • Key Stage One - Years 1 and 2 (ages 5 – 7 years) • Key Stage Two - Years 3 – 6 (ages 7 – 11 years) • Key Stage Three - Years 7 – 9 (ages 11 – 14 years) • Key Stage Four - Years 10 and 11 (ages 14 – 16 years) culminating in (I)GCSE examinations. • International Baccalaureate - Years 12 and 13 (ages 16 – 18 years) culminating in the IB Diploma qualification. The curriculum closely aligns with the National Curriculum of England and Wales for students aged 5 to 16, covering core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, Physical Education, and one of four Modern Languages. Additionally, a variety of creative and humanities subjects are offered across different Key Stages. In the final two years, all students have the opportunity to pursue the full IB Diploma, with a selection of subjects available from the six Diploma subject groups. St. Catherine’s is recognized as an HMC school, an Executive Member of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS), and an IBO World School (number 1370). The school undergoes inspections by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) every three years. Community Located within its own grounds in northern Athens, close to the upscale suburb of Kifisia, St. Catherine’s expanded into a new Upper School building adjacent to the Lower School in 2020. The school boasts excellent teaching, sporting, and recreational facilities, including a large outdoor swimming pool and two libraries. Currently, the school is a Microsoft ‘Incubator School’ equipped with the latest technology. The student population consists of a balanced mix of long-term local (Greek) pupils and expatriate students from around the globe. Due to its academic reputation, St. Catherine’s is the preferred choice for many local and expatriate families seeking a British education in an international setting. Parents come from diverse professional backgrounds and are deeply involved with the school through the PTSA (Parents and Teachers Support Association) and numerous other parent-student initiatives. St. Catherine’s actively incorporates the rich cultural heritage of Greece into its curriculum, with each class exploring various aspects of Greek history or culture, often enhanced by educational excursions. Extracurricular Activities St. Catherine's encourages its students to engage in a wide array of clubs and societies offered during lunch hours and after school. The school nurtures interests in arts, sciences, and sports. Participation in sports competitions is common, both with other schools within Greece and internationally. Throughout the year, debating, oration, and drama competitions take place at both national and international levels. Drama, dance, and music opportunities are accessible to all students, who can learn a variety of musical instruments and prepare for graded music examinations. The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts offers examinations in speech and drama for St. Catherine’s pupils. A notable feature of the school is its International Award / Duke of Edinburgh scheme, which effectively connects to the CAS component of the IB diploma. Regular overseas trips are integral to school life, alongside explorations of Greece’s history and geography. Inter-house activities and the elected School Council enable student participation in school improvement initiatives at all levels.
