Tauranga Special School is the premier provider of specialist education for ORS-funded students across the Western Bay of Plenty, supporting learners aged 5–21. Our vibrant community includes a Base School, five satellite classes, two offsite community classes, and an Outreach Service.

We are seeking an outstanding deputy principal to join our leadership team.

This is a high-profile, fully-released position. Working closely with the principal and leadership team, you’ll provide strategic oversight across our sites to ensure our adapted programs meet the unique characteristics of our learners. 

Key requirements

  • Expertise in specialist education: Deep knowledge of New Zealand Curriculum / Expanded New Zealand Curriculum and proven ability to adapt it for learners with intellectual disabilities, physical needs, and/or complex behaviours.
  • Proven leadership: A track record of successfully leading school-wide initiatives, managing portfolios, and building capacity of teaching staff and specialists.
  • Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi: A grounded understanding of culturally responsive practice. Competency in Te Reo Māori, Tikanga Māori, and frameworks such as Te Whare Tapa Whā, is highly advantageous.
  • Relational excellence: Exceptional interpersonal skills. Ability to build trust with tamariki, whānau, caregivers, community organisations, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Operational sophistication: Strong time management and communication skills to navigate the complexities of a multi-site school and Outreach Service.
  • Trauma-informed lens: Familiarity with Trauma-Informed Practice to support a positive, safe, and inclusive school culture.

Current Teacher Registration essential, as well as a full license as you will need to travel between sites.
