Please note: This vacancy is currently for a teaching position within Key Stage 4 (KS4), however teachers are appointed to work across the school in any age group.

Applications and personal statements must reflect the requirements the job description provided.

About Riverside Bridge School

Riverside Bridge School is a specialist school in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, providing education for pupils aged 4-18 with complex special educational needs and disabilities, including autism, severe learning difficulties and profound and multiple learning difficulties.

Our vision is to Inspire, Empower, Achieve, with communication, independence and meaningful progress at the heart of everything we do.

Our personalised Flow curriculum provides four learning pathways, from pre-formal exploratory learning through to formal education. Our five curriculum drivers — Sense of Self, Community, Culture, Wonder and Future — ensure that learning is purposeful, engaging and relevant to pupils' lives.

Through our BridgeWorks Structured Teaching framework, we establish consistent, accessible and communication-rich learning environments that support understanding, participation and independence.

About the role

We are seeking a committed, adaptable and reflective teacher to join our specialist teaching team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, delivering and assessing high-quality, personalised learning experiences that respond to pupils' individual needs, developmental starting points and Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) outcomes.

The current KS4 position provides an opportunity to support young people in developing their communication, functional literacy and numeracy, independence, social understanding and practical life skills, with a strong emphasis on Preparing for Adulthood.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Planning and delivering personalised teaching aligned with our Flow curriculum and individual EHCP outcomes.

  • Implementing BridgeWorks Structured Teaching, including visual schedules, work systems, structured learning environments and communication-rich approaches.

  • Leading and coordinating a classroom team of co-educators, ensuring effective deployment and consistent support for pupils.

  • Developing pupils' communication through Total Communication, Makaton, symbols, objects of reference and appropriate communication systems.

  • Embedding functional literacy, numeracy, independence and practical life skills throughout the curriculum.

  • Supporting Preparing for Adulthood outcomes, including employment-related learning, independent living, community inclusion and health.

  • Working collaboratively with commissioned therapists and specialist professionals to implement agreed therapeutic strategies throughout the school day.

  • Monitoring and evidencing pupil progress, setting individual targets and contributing to EHCP annual reviews.

  • Maintaining high standards of safeguarding, pupil welfare, supervision and safe classroom practice.

  • Working in partnership with families, colleagues and external professionals to secure the best possible outcomes for pupils.

What we are looking for

We welcome applications from experienced teachers and Early Career Teachers who demonstrate high expectations, a commitment to inclusive education and a willingness to develop specialist teaching expertise.

Candidates should demonstrate strong classroom organisation, effective communication, the ability to lead and work collaboratively with others, and an understanding of how personalised teaching supports pupils with complex learning needs.

Previous experience in a special school is desirable but not essential.

What we offer

At Riverside Bridge School, teachers benefit from high levels of classroom support, typically five adults working with ten pupils, alongside access to commissioned therapists and multidisciplinary professionals.

We provide specialist professional development, structured coaching and training in approaches including BridgeWorks, Total Communication, Makaton, SCERTS-informed practice, Intensive Interaction and TEACCH-informed strategies.

Our collaborative approach enables teachers to develop their professional expertise while making a meaningful difference to pupils' learning, communication and independence.
