Onion Lake Education is a public school system operated by the Onion Lake Cree Nation in Saskatchewan, Canada, located approximately 48 kilometres north of Lloydminster.[1][2] The system comprises five schools serving students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12: Kihew Waciston Cree Immersion School, Pewasenakwan Primary School, Chief Taylor Elementary School, Eagleview Middle School, and Sakaskohc High School.[2] The education system is distinguished by its **Nehiyaw-based curriculum**, emphasizing Cree language and cultural instruction.[5] Kihew Waciston Cree Immersion School, developed in 2005 by Cree linguist Brian Macdonald and local leadership, provides immersion education for early childhood through Grade 4 using the Gift of Language program, focusing on language retention, spoken fluency, reading, and writing.[1] The school's four foundational objectives include language development, kinship, identity, and cultural awareness.[1] Onion Lake Education operates under the governance of the Onion Lake Board of Education, established by the Onion Lake Cree Nation Chief and Council as an exercise of self-determination in education.[5] The system is committed to empowering youth through culturally grounded education while preparing First Nations people to assume leadership roles within the education system.[5] Additionally, the Onion Lake Education Trust Fund provides post-secondary scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,500 for qualifying students attending accredited institutions.[4]
