Jumeirah English Speaking School, often known as JESS, stands out as one of the few remaining non-profit educational institutions in Dubai. The Origins of JESS JESS was established in 1975 within a large apartment close to the Deira Clock Tower, starting with just 17 students. A year later, with financial support from the Ruler of Dubai, we relocated to a villa in Jumeirah. Our growth continued as we transitioned from that villa to a cluster of buildings in the Al Safa area of Jumeirah, which remains the location of the Jumeirah primary school today. Initial funding came through a 'corporate debenture' system, a model still in use at our schools today, with more than 170 companies holding debentures at the Jumeirah site and over 80 at the Arabian Ranches campus, many of which support both locations. JESS in the Present Day Now, over 45 years later, JESS boasts an enrollment of more than 2,500 students across two campuses: approximately 800 at the original Jumeirah primary school and around 1,700 at the Arabian Ranches school, which opened its doors in September 2005. As with other expatriate schools in Dubai, we are a fee-paying institution; however, our debenture system enables us to operate as one of the few non-profit schools in the city. Our Board of Governors oversees the school, ensuring that all decisions made prioritize the best interests of our students, with all finances dedicated solely to educational resources and staffing, reinforcing our commitment to quality education. Our Educational Approach We provide the English curriculum from Foundation 1 through Year 11. For Years 12 and 13, which launched in 2009, we offer the IB Diploma alongside specialized Extended BTEC courses in Art, Sport, and Business, with additional BTEC offerings planned for the future. At JESS, we believe that education extends beyond the classroom. Therefore, we provide an engaging array of extracurricular activities for students in Years 3 and above. Further details can be found in our Examination Results. Facilities at JESS Both JESS campuses feature state-of-the-art facilities that align with our mission of offering a comprehensive education. Each site includes expansive, well-maintained campuses equipped with shaded playgrounds, interactive whiteboards in every classroom, temperature-controlled swimming pools, air-conditioned sports halls, multifunctional PE studios, netball courts, extensive sports fields, fully equipped ICT and Music departments, and well-stocked libraries. The nine-acre Arabian Ranches site also houses a dedicated music center with a digital recording studio, outstanding science, art, and design technology facilities, dance and drama studios, a strength and conditioning suite, a lecture theater, and a 500-seat auditorium with an outdoor amphitheater. In 2009, we introduced a specialized Sixth Form Centre to enhance the learning environment for our senior students. Ultimately, the most valuable resources at JESS are our students and staff.
