Math Specialist /Instructional Coach (Schoolwide)
Summary
The Math Specialist / Instructional Coach plays a vital role in advancing BFIS’s Vision for Learning by enhancing the teaching and learning of mathematics throughout the school, from Elementary to High School. This position is dedicated to building teacher proficiency, ensuring consistent instructional practices, and fostering a deep understanding of mathematics that inspires students to learn confidently, take initiative, and find joy in their education.
As a member of the Teaching and Learning Team, the Math Specialist / Instructional Coach collaborates with educators, Curriculum Coordinators, and school leaders to align the mathematics curriculum—both in writing and delivery—with the Common Core Mathematics Standards for Elementary and the IB MYP and DP frameworks for Secondary. The focus of this role is on depth over breadth, encouraging productive struggle, embracing inclusive practices, nurturing creativity and innovation, and maintaining coherence across various divisions in a diverse, multilingual international school setting.
The Math Instructional Coach operates in a supportive, non-evaluative environment built on trust, collaboration, professional development, and safeguarding.
Reports to: Associate Head of School
Works in collaboration with Curriculum Coordinators, the Teaching and Learning Team, School Leadership, Student Support Teams, and Mathematics educators as needed.
Skills and Requirements
•
In-depth understanding of mathematics pedagogy, curriculum, learning pathways, and effective instructional practices
•
Proven track record in coaching and supporting adult learners
•
Experience in utilizing data and student work to guide instructional choices
•
Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
•
Dedication to inclusive, concept-driven, and student-centered mathematics teaching
•
Background in an international or multilingual educational environment
•
Knowledge of inquiry-based, transdisciplinary, and interdisciplinary methodologies
•
Experience in supporting teachers across various grade levels or divisions
•
Proficiency in Spanish or other languages
•
Bachelor’s degree with the necessary teaching certification and a Master’s Degree in a relevant field
•
At least five years of mathematics classroom teaching experience
•
Training or certification in instructional coaching, curriculum and instruction, or related disciplines
•
Familiarity with Common Core Mathematics Standards
•
Experience with one or more IB programs (MYP and/or DP is strongly preferred)
•
Experience coaching educators individually, in teams, and in whole-school settings
•
Desirable: Experience with Adaptive Schools, Cognitive Coaching, or other collaborative frameworks
