About This Role

At New City College’s Redbridge campus, we are proud of the diverse and vibrant community of learners we serve. We are now seeking an ESOL Pastoral Tutor to join us on a part-time, permanent basis, supporting 16–19-year-old ESOL learners to achieve their potential and make the most of their time at college.

Working with ESOL students requires a thoughtful and individualised approach. Our learners come from a wide range of backgrounds and may have differing levels of English language proficiency, educational experience and support needs. Some may also face additional challenges or vulnerabilities that can affect their wellbeing, engagement and progress.

In this role, you will provide consistent pastoral support through weekly group tutorials and one-to-one sessions, helping learners to build confidence, set goals, overcome barriers and stay engaged with their studies. You will work closely with teaching staff and support teams to monitor attendance and progress, identify learners who may be at risk, and ensure appropriate and timely support is put in place.

Beyond academic support, you will contribute to enrichment activities, promote wellbeing and personal development, and help create a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment in which our ESOL learners can thrive.

This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people while being part of a supportive and dedicated team.

Who You Are

You are someone who connects naturally with young people and is driven by a genuine desire to help them succeed. You will bring experience of working with ESOL learners and an understanding of the particular pastoral, educational and communication needs they may have.

You are patient, empathetic and adaptable, with the ability to build trust and communicate effectively with learners from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. You understand that individual learners may require different levels and types of support and are confident working collaboratively with teaching staff and wider support services to help them succeed.

You will also have strong communication and organisational skills and a good understanding of safeguarding, equality, diversity and student wellbeing. Above all, you will be proactive, approachable and committed to helping young people develop their confidence, independence and future aspirations.

We’re looking for someone to step into a rewarding term-time role:

  • Hours: 28 hours per week, across four days.
  • Schedule: Start and finish times vary between 8:30am and 5:00pm, depending on the timetable
  • Term Time Only: 40 weeks per year
  • Dates: This year runs from mid-August, around GCSE results week, through to mid-July, slightly different from the standard school academic calendar

This role offers consistency, a clear structure and the chance to make a real impact during the academic year while enjoying extended breaks outside of term time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging weekly group tutorials tailored to the needs of 16–19-year-old ESOL learners, supporting their personal development, confidence and wellbeing.
  • Provide individual 1:1 pastoral support, helping students to set and review achievable SMART targets.
  • Monitor attendance, engagement and progress, identifying learners who may be at risk and coordinating appropriate support and interventions.
  • Build positive and supportive relationships with learners, recognising the differing cultural, linguistic and personal circumstances they may bring.
  • Work collaboratively with ESOL teaching staff, parents or carers where appropriate, and wider college support teams to promote student success.
  • Support students with progression planning, helping them understand and explore their next steps in education, training or employment.
  • Contribute to enrichment activities that encourage participation, confidence, independence and a sense of belonging within the college community.
  • Promote safeguarding, wellbeing and an inclusive environment in which all learners feel safe, respected and supported.
  • 9. Support vulnerable learners, including ESOL, Looked After Children (LAC) and care experienced students, by attending and contributing to Personal Education Plan (PEP) meetings, working with external agencies and college staff to ensure learners receive appropriate support and achieve successful outcomes.
