Duties and Responsibilities:
The Saulteaux First Nation is seeking a passionate and dedicated Land-Based Teacher to become part of our educational team. This position is designed for an individual excited to integrate Indigenous knowledge, culture, and language into the curriculum while helping students develop a deep connection to the land. The Land-Based Teacher will work closely with students, families, and community members to create a comprehensive learning experience that honors Saulteaux traditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a land-based curriculum that encompasses all core academic subjects, enriched with Saulteaux culture, history, and language.
- Lead outdoor learning experiences that engage students in traditional activities such as hunting, fishing, foraging, and cultural ceremonies.
- Collaborate with local Elders and knowledge keepers to enrich educational programs and provide mentorship to students.
- Foster a safe and inclusive classroom environment that promotes respect, resilience, and personal growth.
- Assess and evaluate student progress through observation and meaningful assessments that reflect educational standards and community values.
- Organize and coordinate community events, workshops, and field trips that enhance students’ understanding of their cultural heritage and the natural world.
- Maintain open communication with parents and guardians to keep them informed about students’ progress and opportunities for involvement in their education.
- Stay informed about best practices in land-based education and Indigenous pedagogy to continually improve teaching methods.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s of Education Degree
- Valid Professional “A” Teaching Certificate
- Strong understanding of Saulteaux Culture preferred and/or a willingness to learn
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Commitment to innovative and flexible teaching strategies that cater to the diverse needs of students
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team and engage with the community
- First Aid and CPR certification is an asset.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel within the community and surrounding areas.
