About This Role

Avenor College is on the lookout for a knowledgeable, effective, and experienced Head of Science to lead a dynamic, diverse, and collaborative department within our three modern, fully equipped laboratories housed in the cutting-edge Senior building. The Science department is made up of seven Science teachers and two lab technicians. Our college offers numerous opportunities for personal and professional development through a model that empowers educators with voice, choice, and agency.

Currently, we offer two IGCSE pathways: CAIE Coordinated Science (Double Award) and CAIE Separate Sciences (Triple Award). Our Key Stage 3 curriculum features a Romanian national strand in Science for a select group of students, while the majority engage with the UK National Curriculum through an in-house scheme that emphasizes the cultivation of investigative skills. At the AS and A Level, students have the option to study Biology, Chemistry, and Physics under the Cambridge International Curriculum.

We encourage candidates who fulfill the following criteria to apply:

  • Articulate how a departmental vision can align with the school's broader vision;
  • Ensure that teachers, students, and parents are well-informed about the department's goals and direction;
  • Provide examples of leadership that promote a culture of engagement, ambition, openness, integrity, and community among educators;
  • Possess extensive and adaptable subject knowledge to design and facilitate learning in at least two sciences at IGCSE and at least one at A Level;
  • Hold valid qualifications as a Science teacher;
  • Understand student learning processes, inspiring and challenging them to create engaging learning experiences;
  • Leverage the scientific cycle of inquiry to enhance investigative skills across all year groups;
  • Lead curriculum development by updating schemes of work and collaborating with other subject leaders for cohesive articulation;
  • Create opportunities for Science learning beyond the classroom by contributing to our robust co-curricular program;
  • Be fluent in English;
  • Inspire trust and confidence among students, parents, and colleagues;
  • Uphold, respect, and embody the values of Avenor.

We value the following qualities and hope you can showcase them:

  • Cultivate positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues;
  • Be an effective team player and builder;
  • Practice active listening;
  • Demonstrate fairness and consistency;
  • Maintain a positive outlook and serve as a role model through personal example;
  • Embrace inclusivity and a commitment to intercultural learning;
  • Exhibit strong organizational skills and preparedness, demonstrating resilience;
  • Lead a healthy lifestyle;
  • Show dedication to your own personal and professional development;
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for your work and embody the spirit of lifelong learning.

We offer:

  • A competitive salary and benefits package;
  • An initial two-year contract with the possibility of annual renewal;
  • A comprehensive staff well-being program;
  • Opportunities for professional learning and development;
  • Possibilities to organize and deliver adult learning;
  • Membership in a supportive community of learners, where collaboration and growth are encouraged.
