Position Overview

• Preference for candidates with teaching experience in the UK.

• A minimum of 2 years teaching experience in AL/IGCSE/AP in the relevant subject area.

Key Responsibilities of the Teaching Role

• Create and implement lessons in accordance with the Scheme of Work, incorporating a variety of learning activities.

• Design and administer assessments per departmental guidelines, ensuring timely and compliant reporting.

• Continuously assess student performance, provide constructive feedback, and develop appropriate assessments to monitor progress and identify areas for improvement.

• Collaborate with colleagues to cultivate a supportive work environment, sharing resources and best practices.

• Opportunities exist to teach AP Physics.

• Potential to instruct RPQ (projects) & GNT (Gifted and Talented).

About SCIE

We are a high school offering a UK curriculum (Cambridge International AS/AL & IGCSE) primarily in English to Chinese students preparing for overseas universities.

As of 2025, we have launched an AP stream, providing further teaching opportunities in various subjects for those interested in the AP curriculum.

Our mission focuses on educating students in a challenging international environment, promoting academic excellence while nurturing social responsibility, creativity, independence, and enthusiasm, thereby preparing each student for their future.

• Examinations include AS/AL, IGCSE (Cambridge International and AQA), and AP (College Board).

• Day and boarding institution – teachers are not involved in boarding operations and have no evening or night duties.

• Established in 2003.

Subject Department Overview:

The Physics department comprises 19 full-time teachers and 4 technicians, utilizing 11 specialized laboratories. Instructors will teach a variety of courses, including IGCSE Physics for UK Years 10 and 11 and AS/AL Physics for Years 12 and 13. The subject is highly popular, with approximately 80% of students taking it at AS level and two-thirds at A Level. Our results consistently show over 90% A/A* at IGCSE and 90% at A Level. Many SCIE students apply to prestigious universities in the UK and US for Physics or Engineering, with a significant number gaining admission to Oxbridge programs in Physics, Engineering, or Natural Sciences.

The ideal candidate will be flexible within team dynamics, proactive, and enthusiastic about incorporating practical work into their teaching. Experience in teaching advanced Physics and leading extension classes will be beneficial. A commitment to “teaching to the top” and effective scaffolding is vital; the successful candidate will excel in providing consistent opportunities for critical thinking and regularly utilize techniques to assess understanding, ensuring responsive learning.

Students

• Students complete IGCSE exams at the end of G2 before pursuing 5/6 subjects at AS, and 4/5 at AL (including English) or following an AP curriculum.

• Average international exam results typically reflect grades A/A* across the school.

• The 2025 cohort received 41 offers from Oxbridge, with over 90% of students applying to the UK receiving offers from top 10 universities.

• US university offers include prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Chicago, Johns Hopkins, Duke, Columbia, and Cornell.

• Students achieve outstanding success across various subjects, including Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Languages, Science, and Mathematics.

• Maximum class sizes are 26 for IGCSE and 24 for AS/A Level.

• A vast range of extracurricular activities is available, with over 200 clubs led by both staff and students.

Schedule

• Work week: Monday – Friday, from 07:50 – 16:40 (07:30 start on Mondays with an early finish at 15:00 on Fridays).

• Typical teaching load – 24 periods of 40 minutes each week (approximately 50% of the timetable).

• Personal time – 6 periods per week are included in the timetable when presence at school is not required.

• Extracurricular Activity – 1 hour per week is allocated for ECA after school (16:30 – 17:30).

• CPD – numerous professional development opportunities are available, both online and in person.

• Holidays include 1 week for October China National Day, 2 weeks for Christmas, 3 weeks for Chinese New Year, Chinese public holidays, and a summer break from mid-June to early August.

Pastoral Care

Pastoral care is fundamental to our ethos at SCIE. All classroom educators contribute to student safety, foster a sense of belonging, and support student well-being throughout their college experience.

• Form tutor responsibilities – most classroom teachers will lead a form group of about 20 students. This entails regular individual mentoring sessions, periodic form time, and teaching a weekly PSHE lesson. As the primary contact for students, form tutors are responsible for understanding their tutees beyond academic performance. This role includes an additional allowance.

• Teachers without a form tutor responsibility may be assigned extra pastoral duties as necessary.

• Pastoral professional development – in addition to annual safeguarding training, there are opportunities to enhance your practice in this area and contribute to school-wide pastoral initiatives.
