ABOUT IBSB
Located in the city center, IBSB is recognized for its academic and athletic achievements. It is noted as the first British DfE-inspected school in Romania, the first international institution accredited by the Romanian Ministry of Education, a fully accredited member of COBIS & AoBSO, the first High-Performance Learning (HPL) school in Romania, and the inaugural NACE Challenge Award School in the country.
Following an ISI inspection in September 2022, IBSB was awarded the highest rating of 'Excellent' for the 'Quality of Education' provided, with 57% of our IGCSE students achieving A-A* grades and 95% of graduates being accepted into the top 5% of universities worldwide. Our school community comprises around 500 students, with 65% Romanian and 35% international, representing over 30 different nations.
LIVING IN ROMANIA
Romania is truly one of the most enjoyable countries in Europe to live and work in. The people are known for their friendliness and hospitality, with many being well-educated and multilingual, including proficiency in English.
The country experiences four distinct seasons, featuring beautiful beaches, Europe’s last untouched mountain wilderness, ski resorts just over 90 minutes from Bucharest, charming old towns with cobblestone streets, and a wealth of castles and monasteries, all in a climate that enjoys more sunny days than rainy ones. King Charles III has two residences in Romania and considers it one of his favorite destinations, choosing to visit the country first after his coronation.
Romania's central location within the EU enables affordable flights, such as those from Ryanair and Wizzair, to most major cities for under 100 euros when booked in advance, including return trips to the UK. Additionally, many find they can save a considerable portion of their salary here—generally more than in Spain, Italy, Greece, and other Mediterranean or Black Sea regions.
LIFE IN BUCHAREST
The capital city is known for its cleanliness and safety, featuring an effective public metro and tram system that costs about 20 euros for a monthly pass (free for students). The city is safe for nighttime walks, and there are numerous weekend activities to enjoy. Shopping malls filled with Western brand stores and restaurants offer prices significantly lower than those in Western Europe, allowing for a better cost of living.
International teachers often earn 2-3 times the average salary, making it easier to save money, and dining out is quite economical, averaging around 15 euros for a two-course meal with a drink—many of our international staff enjoy dining out frequently.
Moreover, it is feasible to save enough for a deposit on your own apartment by the end of your initial contract, as many staff members have successfully done so.
TEACHING AT IBSB
IBSB students typically outperform the UK average in both ability and behavior, making teaching here a fulfilling experience. The school offers strong support from both staff and parents, and we are fortunate to have one of the most engaged Parent Associations I have encountered, which recently organized a surprise morning tea for staff to express their appreciation for a successful first term.
