Maskwacis, Alberta, is home to four bands: Samson, Ermineskin, Louis Bull, and Montana. The Maskwacis Education Schools Commission (MESC) manages ten schools committed to serving students from Maskwacis while honoring the Nehiyaw language, culture, and traditions.

About Maskwacis Cree Junior High School
Nestled in the scenic area of Maskwacis, Maskwacis Cree Junior High School (Grades 7-9) prioritizes the integration of Cree language and land-based teachings in its educational programs. These principles are central to the mission of all MESC schools.

Position Overview
The Assistant Principal plays a vital role in supporting the Principal with the daily operations of the school. This position collaborates with students and staff to foster a positive, professional learning atmosphere that promotes student achievement. The Assistant Principal will provide leadership in areas such as curriculum development, scheduling, extracurricular activities, emergency procedures, and student conduct and discipline. Additionally, this role serves as a role model, guiding both staff and students toward a fulfilling educational experience. As a leader within the organization, the Assistant Principal will embody the principles outlined in the Maskwacis Declaration on Education and the core values of Îyinîw Mâmitonehicikan, Nehiyaw Pimâtisiwin, Nehiyawewin, and Wâhkôhtowin. This commitment is demonstrated through:

- Making decisions that ultimately benefit Maskwacis students.
- Assisting the Superintendent and the board to ensure all students can exercise their treaty right to quality education.
- Promoting and respecting the Cree language, spirituality, and traditions within the Education Authority.
- Providing Maskwacis leadership (the Cree way) in all educational matters within the Maskwacis Schools, including consensus building, engaging stakeholders in dialogue, and empowering leadership throughout the system.

Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
- Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate.
- At least 5 years of teaching experience (Grades 3-6 preferred).
- Minimum of 2 years in an administrative or leadership role.
- Proven knowledge and respect for Nehiyawewin (Cree language), culture, and traditions.

Preferred:
- Master’s Degree in Education or Leadership.
- Experience in Indigenous education or within Indigenous communities.
- Familiarity with the Maskwacis Declaration on Education.

- Excellent communication, organizational, and team management abilities.
- Capacity to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficient decision-making, problem-solving, and time management skills.
- Culturally responsive leadership with political awareness.
