TEACHER AND TUTOR

The successful candidate will serve as both a teacher and tutor, fulfilling the responsibilities outlined in the generic job description.

Head of Physical Education, Swimming, Sport & ECA

As the Head of Department, you will be tasked with making informed and effective decisions regarding the planning, implementation, and assessment of both the curriculum and extracurricular activities. This role involves leading and managing both teaching and non-teaching personnel, as well as organizing departmental resources, with overall accountability for the quality of student work, outcomes, and behavior in the department.

Department Planning

In collaboration with the Principal:


Develop a Development and Improvement Plan that aligns with the School Development and Improvement Plan, specifying the department's short, medium, and long-term objectives;


Oversee the execution and assessment of the Development and Improvement Plan; and


Prepare the department for both internal and external reviews, including the KHDA inspection.

Curriculum


Design and supervise schemes of work for Physical Education, Swimming, Sport & ECA that meet statutory requirements while aligning with the school's aims, policies, and ethos.


Work with department members and the Curriculum Manager/Head of School to assess and adjust schemes of work based on new approaches, updated examination syllabi, or modified school or national policies.


Ensure that a high-quality extracurricular sports curriculum addresses the needs of students with varying abilities.


Differentiate schemes of work to cater to individual learner needs.


Coordinate with the SENCO regarding learners with special educational needs.


Ensure schemes of work demonstrate continuity and progression in:


Curriculum objectives and content;


Enhancing cross-curricular skills; and


Teaching and learning strategies.


Ensure that the Physical Education, Swimming, Sport & ECA schemes of work build on skills, attitudes, knowledge, and concepts established in EYFS and primary school and continue through to post-16.


Assist the Curriculum Manager/Head of School in enhancing cross-curricular themes and skills.


Promote teaching and learning strategies that engage learners and cater to individual needs, drawing from effective practices across the faculty.


Procure a diverse range of educational resources.


Collaborate with the Librarian to acquire materials that support the curriculum.


Develop and monitor assessment procedures that align with school policy and legal requirements.


Evaluate the appropriateness of courses from various examination boards and select those that best serve the learners’ needs and aspirations.


Organize educational trips that support curriculum objectives.


Contribute to the school timetable planning as needed.


Stay informed about advancements in Physical Education, Swimming, Sport & ECA and communicate these to the Principal.


Coordinate with other Heads of Department on whole school curriculum planning.


Work with the Senior Leadership Team to prepare the school calendar.

Learners


Set and maintain high expectations for learners.


Ensure adherence to school guidelines regarding behavior, work presentation, and homework completion.


Establish procedures for assessing and recording learner progress in accordance with school and national policy.


Ensure that learner records are consistently passed from year to year.


Organize teaching groups into appropriate sets.


Provide information and guidance to learners and their parents about courses offered by the department at Key Stage 1, Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, and Key Stage 5.


Supervise the completion of reports and Individual Action Plans.


Coordinate with pastoral and learning support staff regarding individual learner needs, especially during stressful periods.


Monitor attendance and punctuality while ensuring learners utilize their planners.


Assist in reinforcing discipline and acknowledging individual achievements.

Management of Staff

The Head of PE Department should possess the ability to lead, inspire, and maximize the potential of others, fostering a shared vision and sense of purpose within the department.


Assist in the recruitment and selection process.


Help prepare job descriptions and delegate appropriate responsibilities and duties to department members.


Facilitate the induction of newly appointed teachers.


Provide comprehensive guidance and support for newly qualified teachers, those returning to teaching, and those engaged in training programs.


Prepare reports on newly qualified teachers.


Conduct the appraisal process.


Identify staff strengths and areas for improvement, taking steps to enhance morale.


Alert the Senior Leadership Team line manager to any concerns regarding the professional capabilities of teaching and non-teaching staff.


Implement school procedures for monitoring and evaluating the performance of teachers in the Physical Education, Swimming, Sport & ECA department.


Ensure lesson plans are prepared, schemes of work are adhered to, learner work is assessed, and the credit system is utilized by staff.


Establish channels for departmental consultation, communication, and evaluation.


Conduct efficient departmental meetings and distribute minutes to department members, the Principal, and the SLT line manager.


Ensure departmental representation at cross-curricular group meetings.


Organize work for absent staff, ensuring appropriate tasks are set and resources provided.


Assist in the deployment of support teaching staff.


Engage with the Senior Leadership Team representative to exchange information.


Maintain in-depth, professional knowledge of departmental staff, showing interest in their wellbeing and offering guidance as needed.

Teaching Staff


Assist, when requested, in the recruitment and appointment of non-teaching staff.


Implement an induction program for new non-teaching staff.


Assign staff within the department and prepare job descriptions.


Monitor and assess the performance of non-teaching staff.

Resources and Accommodation


Ensure that resources within the Physical Education, Swimming, Sport & ECA department are relevant to both curriculum and extracurricular needs and are well-maintained.


Assist in preparing an annual departmental budget for the Operations Manager while ensuring accurate financial records are kept.


Oversee the purchase, maintenance, and appropriate allocation of resources.


Maintain accurate stock records.


Set standards for the proper care of facilities, furniture, and equipment, demonstrating the efficient and effective use of resources.


Enhance the learning environment by ensuring that:


Classrooms/Sports areas are kept clean and organized; and


Learner work is regularly displayed within and outside the classroom.


Collaborate with the Health and Safety representative to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for both learners and teachers.


Work with the Business Manager on all financial-related matters.

Examinations


Coordinate with the Examinations Officer regarding entry procedures.


Ensure that all required coursework is submitted to the exam boards.


Arrange visits from external moderators.


Monitor examination results within the faculty and prepare reports for the Principal.


Prepare internal examination question papers in collaboration with other faculty members.


Organize teacher assessments of learner work aligned with the National Curriculum.

The Community


Facilitate effective communication with parents in line with school policies.


Support the induction of learners at all entry levels into the school.


Provide learners with guidance on post-16 courses.


Contribute to reports for Governors as required.


Maintain communication with support services and advisory staff.


Promote connections with the local community that enhance curriculum offerings.

Additional Responsibilities as Head of Department


Evaluate and monitor staff performance to inform appraisal processes.


Participate in strategic planning, monitoring, and evaluation for the whole school.

General


Engage in the performance and development review process, taking responsibility for identifying personal learning, development, and training opportunities in collaboration with your line manager.


Comply with individual responsibilities regarding health and safety in the workplace.

Rebranding and professionalizing the identity of sport at TSS.


Cultivating external partnerships and sponsorships to generate funds and expand learner opportunities.

Events


School Sports Day – EYFS/Primary/Secondary – Organize sports days for each educational phase.


BSME – Lead and participate in BSME tournaments by coordinating learner transport and extracurricular clubs to enhance skill development in those sports/activities.


Dubai 30x30 – Organize a program that aligns with Dubai 30x30 initiatives across the UAE to promote 30 minutes of exercise for 30 days.


Sports Teams – Lead and delegate the organization of school sports teams and their involvement in inter-school events and competitions, including EISA and DASSA league participation, UAE School Games, and BSME Games, as well as serving on the EISSA Board.


Oversee the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award program.


Manage the full school House system and integrate it into the broader school culture. Lead and coordinate the School House System by developing a strategic vision for house events, promoting school-wide participation, and fostering a strong sense of community and school spirit.


Collaborate across departments and phases to organize inter-house competitions, track points and achievements, and ensure consistency and fairness in house-related activities and policies.
