About This Role

We are looking for an outstanding and dynamic Assistant Head of Secondary to become part of our Senior Leadership Team. This essential leadership position is ideal for a motivated, values-driven individual who is dedicated to achieving high standards in teaching, learning, student well-being, and overall outcomes. The ideal candidate will possess a strong strategic perspective, operational efficiency, and the ability to inspire staff, engage parents, and make significant contributions to the ongoing development and excellence of the Secondary phase.

As a vital member of the Secondary Senior Leadership Team, the Assistant Head of Secondary will play a key role in the strategic, academic, and operational leadership of the phase. This position will assist the Head of Secondary in advancing school improvement goals, maintaining high expectations, and ensuring a consistent, positive experience for students.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership


Assist the Head of Secondary in realizing the school’s vision, values, and strategic improvement goals.


Participate in self-evaluation activities, improvement planning, and preparation for inspections.


Exemplify high professional standards while fostering a culture of aspiration, inclusion, accountability, and continuous growth.

Teaching, Learning and Standards


Evaluate the quality of teaching and learning through lesson observations, learning walks, work reviews, and student feedback.


Collaborate closely with Heads of Department, Heads of Year, and curriculum leaders to enhance achievement and accelerate progress.


Promote uniformity in curriculum planning, assessment, feedback, and classroom practices throughout the Secondary phase.


Lead or assist in whole-school or phase-specific teaching and learning initiatives.

Data, Assessment and Reporting


Utilize assessment data to identify trends, strengths, and areas needing improvement, aiding targeted intervention strategies.


Contribute to the creation and refinement of effective tracking, monitoring, and reporting systems.


Assist in analyzing and presenting student performance data to senior leaders, governors, and external stakeholders.


A solid background or interest in data leadership and performance reporting would be beneficial.

Pastoral Care, Behaviour and Safeguarding


Promote high standards of behavior, attendance, and student conduct throughout the Secondary school.


Collaborate with pastoral and inclusion teams to prioritize student well-being, safeguarding, and a sense of belonging.


Engage professionally with parents to address concerns and build constructive relationships.


Foster and uphold a strong safeguarding culture in alignment with school policies and legal requirements.

Operational Leadership


Assist in the smooth daily operation of the Secondary school.


Participate in timetabling, event planning, examination processes, enrichment programs, and school routines.


Ensure that policies and procedures are implemented consistently and effectively.

Staff Development and Performance


Line manage designated middle leaders or teaching staff as necessary.


Participate in appraisal, performance management, and professional development processes.


Provide coaching, mentoring, and leadership support to enhance team capacity.


Encourage collaboration, professional dialogue, and opportunities for leadership development.

Parental and Community Engagement


Maintain robust communication with parents to support student progress and well-being.


Represent the school at meetings, events, and community initiatives.


Support programs that promote student leadership, enrichment, and broader participation.

Professional Expectations


Show a commitment to ongoing professional learning and leadership development.


Stay informed about current educational research, curriculum advancements, and inspection frameworks.


Fulfill safeguarding responsibilities and uphold the professional standards expected of senior leaders.
