About This Role

Teacher of English, High School

We are seeking a High School English teacher to instruct students in Grades 9-12. In grades 9 and 10, our curriculum is a unique blend of homegrown English content inspired by the IB philosophy and learner profile, aimed at equipping students for IB challenges and their future university studies, both in Turkey and internationally. Our learners are assessed in English as their first language, utilizing Literature as a foundation to enhance and evaluate their language skills. Given that our high school students may have joined the school at various stages—kindergarten, grade 1, grade 5, or grade 9—we offer differentiated instruction to meet the diverse English proficiency levels within our student body.

The role involves teaching multiple levels within the high school English program, potentially including IB English A: Language and Literature. Our institution offers a bilingual qualification at the IB Diploma level, with students selecting either the IB or Turkish national curriculum path upon entering 11th grade.

Summary of Main Responsibilities:

- Create units, lessons, and assessments that align with our English standards, school mission, and social-emotional learning (SEL) objectives.
- Deliver engaging, student-centered instruction that caters to the diverse needs of learners in the classroom.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to students throughout each unit.
- Uphold high academic standards while providing necessary support to help students meet those expectations.
- Assess student understanding through various methods, adjusting teaching methodologies based on assessment results, and track the progress of students who are struggling to meet standards.
- Maintain regular communication with parents to keep them updated on their child’s progress in English.
- Collaborate effectively with level leaders, the Head of Department, the Assessments and Evaluation team, and the Academic Dean.
- Actively participate in school life by attending events and leading extracurricular activities.
- Fulfill any additional responsibilities assigned by the school leadership team.

The ideal candidate will possess:

- A continual interest in educational practices and all facets of teaching and learning.
- A readiness to contribute positively to the collaborative environment of the English department and the school community as a whole.
- Excellent native or near-native fluency in English, alongside strong oral and written communication abilities.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, enabling effective and positive communication with all members of the school community.
- Proficiency in integrating technology into lessons.
- A willingness and capability to embed Social Emotional Learning within the English curriculum framework.
- Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability to changes as necessary.

Required qualifications:

- A Bachelor’s degree in English or English Literature, along with a professional teaching qualification, is mandatory.
- A minimum of two years of teaching experience in high school English is essential.
- Familiarity and experience with teaching IB English A: Language and Literature is preferred.
- A demonstrated commitment to the safeguarding and welfare of children and young people is required.
