About Citizens School

Citizens School is pioneering a new educational approach, where our mission is to "Inspire, Empower, Thrive." Our foundational values are based on four key pillars: fostering entrepreneurial mindsets, embracing inquiry-based learning, facilitating transdisciplinary project-based learning, and recognizing every learner as a valued individual. We are committed to equipping students for future challenges by integrating real-world applications across all subjects and supporting each learner's exploration and growth in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Role Overview

We are in search of an enthusiastic Science Secondary Mentor who will ignite a passion for science, connect classroom teachings to practical experiences, and lead the transformation of science education for our secondary students. With outstanding facilities, including two rooftop greenhouses and a new Secondary School in development, this position offers an exceptional opportunity to deliver all three sciences through engaging, inquiry-based experiences. Collaborating with the Science Subject Leader, you will play a vital role in shaping our secondary and future sixth-form science curriculum, ensuring that science is an integral part of our entrepreneurial and inquiry-driven educational philosophy.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Curriculum Innovation:

As a Secondary Science Mentor, you will partner with the Science Lead to weave Citizens School’s entrepreneurial curriculum into science lessons, motivating students to draw connections across scientific fields and investigate concepts through hands-on experimentation, inquiry, and creativity. Foster curiosity and real-world relevance to create a high-quality science curriculum that captivates learners of all skill levels. Adapt lesson plans to meet varied learning needs, collaborating with the Inclusion team to provide focused support for students with special educational requirements. Ensure continuity and advancement within science schemes, develop assessments to track student progress, and assist learners through a cycle of evaluation, feedback, and interventions to ensure ongoing growth.

2. Inquiry-Based Learning:

Adopt an inquiry-based methodology that transforms students into analytical thinkers and problem solvers. Leverage our rooftop greenhouses and other practical resources to connect scientific inquiry to real-life scenarios, enhancing understanding of how science influences our world.

3. Project-Based Learning (PBL):

Guide transdisciplinary projects that merge the British Curriculum with the International Baccalaureate’s inquiry-focused learning approach. Support students as they confront real-world challenges and cultivate essential skills such as teamwork, adaptability, and resilience within a scientifically rigorous framework.

4. Individualized Support:

Embody our principle of "Everyone known and known well" by establishing meaningful connections with students. Acknowledge each individual's strengths, needs, and aspirations to provide customized support that empowers every student to achieve their potential.

5. Team Member:

- As a member of the Science Team, contribute a positive attitude and a proactive approach to foster a collaborative and supportive team environment. Collaborate with the Science Curriculum Leader to align goals and ensure a unified vision for success. Inspire and energize your colleagues, and communicate positively and supportively.

- Participate in, and when necessary, lead effective and purposeful meetings, ensuring that all team members stay informed through clear and concise minutes.

Qualifications and Skills

- A specialist in science with proficiency in at least one of the following: Physics, Chemistry, or Biology.

- Demonstrated experience with iGCSEs and delivering project-based and inquiry-led science education, preferably within the British or International Baccalaureate curriculum.

- A strong passion for connecting classroom learning with real-world applications, fostering a hands-on approach to science education.

- A deep commitment to personalized learning experiences and nurturing an inclusive environment.

- Strong academic background in a relevant field; a Bachelor’s degree is required.

- Possession of a valid teaching credential with at least two years of teaching experience.

- Excellent organizational, administrative, and interpersonal abilities.
