About This Role

Learning Support Teacher – Autumn 2026

Hurst Lodge School, is an independent special school, dedicated to supporting children aged 7–19 years who have a range of additional needs. We pride ourselves on our nurturing environment, creative curriculum, and highly collaborative approach - ensuring every pupil feels understood, valued, and empowered to reach their potential.

 

This is a preferably a full-time post but flexibility can be considered for a suitable candidate.  Required for Autumn 2026.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide individualised and group support to students with dyslexia and dyscalculia, enabling them to access the curriculum and achieve their full potential.

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify students' learning strengths and areas for development, using a range of diagnostic tools and techniques.

  • Develop and implement personalised learning plans and strategies to address students' specific learning needs, in collaboration with teachers and parents.

  • Deliver targeted intervention sessions focusing on literacy, numeracy, study skills, and other areas as required, using evidence-based approaches and resources.

  • Monitor students' progress regularly and adjust support strategies as needed, ensuring continuous improvement and positive outcomes.

  • Work closely with classroom teachers to differentiate instruction and provide ongoing support and guidance on effective teaching strategies for students with learning difficulties.

  • Collaborate with other members of the Learning Support team and external specialists to develop and implement whole-school initiatives and support systems.

  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, interventions, and assessments, in compliance with school policies and procedures.

  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues to foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment.

  • Stay updated on current research, best practices, and legislative requirements related to special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to inform teaching practice and professional development.

  • Promote positive student behaviour during lessons within your class and across the school.

Person Specification

Experience

Proven experience working as a Learning Support Teacher or SENDCo in a school setting, with a strong understanding of inclusive practices and differentiation strategies.

  

Skills and Knowledge

Level 7 qualification in Special Educational Needs Coordination (SENDCo) or equivalent, with specific training and expertise in supporting students with dyslexia and dyscalculia. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification

  • Demonstrated ability to assess, plan, and deliver effective support and intervention for students with diverse learning needs, including dyslexia and dyscalculia.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.

  • Commitment to promoting an inclusive and supportive learning environment where all students can thrive.

  • Good literacy and numeracy skills, Excellent verbal communication skills, Active listening skills

  • The ability to remain calm in stressful situations

  • Good ICT skills, particularly using ICT to support learning GCSE or equivalent level, including at least a Grade 4 (previously Grade C) in English and Maths

Other Responsibilities

Safety & Wellbeing / Safeguarding:  Promote the safety and wellbeing of students, and help to safeguard students’ wellbeing by following the requirements of Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) and our school’s child protection policy

Professional Development: Help keep own knowledge and understanding relevant and up to date by reflecting on their own practice, liaising with school leaders, and identifying relevant professional development to improve personal effectiveness. Take opportunities to build the appropriate skills, qualifications, and/or experience needed for the role, with support from the school

Competitive salary, dependent on experience and qualifications. £36-40k (actual salary for full time)

Hours: Monday, Wednesdays and Thursdays 8.15am – 4.30pm, Tuesday 8.15am to 5.30pm (includes 1 hour CPD at the end of the day) Fridays 8.15am– 1.30pm (32 weeks plus inset days)
