The Role: Assistant Head (Assessment) for the Junior School

As an integral member of the Junior Leadership Team, the Assistant Head (Assessment) is essential in managing student assessments within the Junior School.

The Assistant Headteacher (Assessment) leads the design, implementation, and analysis of student assessment data to track progress, inform curriculum development, and promote academic achievement. This position entails ensuring accurate and timely data collection, monitoring student performance, addressing areas of underachievement, and sharing insights with the Junior Leadership Team.

Key Responsibilities of the Role

  • Assessment Strategy: Design, implement, and evaluate an effective assessment framework grounded in best practices.
  • Data Analysis: Examine internal and external data (such as PUMA and PIRA outcomes, test scores) and prepare reports for the Junior Leadership Team (JLT) and governors.
  • Monitoring Progress: Identify trends in student performance and develop strategies to address gaps through targeted interventions.
  • Reporting: Manage the assessment calendar to effectively communicate student performance to parents and staff.

Management Duties

  • Act as deputy for the Deputy Head - Academic.
  • Keep the Head informed and raise any pertinent issues.
  • Participate in JLT meetings, contributing to discussions regarding school-wide matters.
  • Collaborate with the Senior School Assistant Head on assessment-related issues.
  • Serve as a communication conduit between the Head and staff concerning assessments.
  • Assist in the onboarding process for new staff members.
  • Support recruitment initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development of the Junior School timetable and allocation of Teaching/Class Assistants.
  • Co-Chair Pupil Progress meetings.
  • Conduct appraisals according to the established schedule.
  • Co-Lead weekly meetings for Teaching Assistants/Class Assistants, coordinating training updates in collaboration with the Head of Learning Support and other relevant personnel.
  • Take minutes for JLT meetings as necessary.
  • Lead school assemblies as directed.

Assessment Responsibilities

  • Order and organize all assessment materials.
  • Coordinate and conduct external assessments, including Taster days and assessments abroad.
  • Manage data tracking software.
  • Update assessment and monitoring policies.
  • Create assessment timetables.
  • Work with the SENDCo to manage screeners.
  • Oversee pupil targets and track progress.

Data Management

  • Administer pupil profile data.
  • Meet with staff each term to review pupil progress data.
  • Organize ISI data.
  • Analyze both summative and formative assessment data, reporting findings to relevant parties, including JLT and Governors.
  • Collect data during assessment weeks and collaborate with relevant staff – HLP, SEND, etc.
  • Bi-termly track effort and attainment grades to monitor student progress.
  • Review Effort and Attainment grades on reports, ensuring parents are informed of any updates.
  • Assist in identifying students requiring support.

£30,000 - £45,000+ (Regional Equivalent)
