Job Overview

The Head of Art & Design at AMIS Schools is tasked with steering and enhancing the Art & Design Department, cultivating creativity, innovation, and technical proficiency while ensuring the provision of exceptional education in visual arts and Design & Technology. This position merges strategic leadership, curriculum design, mentorship for teachers, and student development across the fields of Art, Design, and Technology. The Head of Art & Design will significantly influence the creation of a progressive curriculum that encompasses fine arts, design thinking, resistant materials, graphic products, and digital design methodologies. This role necessitates close collaboration with school leadership, faculty, students, parents, and the broader community to foster a vibrant and inspiring learning atmosphere.

Key Responsibilities


Curriculum Development & Implementation


Craft, execute, and manage a thorough Art & Design curriculum that aligns with AMIS Schools’ educational standards and international best practices.


Incorporate fine arts, graphic design, resistant materials, product design, visual communication, and digital media into the curriculum.


Integrate contemporary art trends, emerging technologies, and design thinking approaches.

Teaching & Learning Excellence


Guide and support educators in delivering exceptional Art & Design and D&T instruction through mentorship and professional advice.


Encourage creativity, innovation, critical thinking, and problem-solving among students.


Ensure the successful implementation of studio work, technical drawing, design projects, and student portfolios.

Teacher Training & Professional Development


Offer continual professional development in Art, Design, and Design & Technology teaching methodologies.


Promote interdisciplinary collaboration across different departments.


Stay informed about global trends in art and design education.

Student Engagement & Assessment


Assess and evaluate student progress through both formative and summative assessment techniques.


Assist students in creating strong portfolios for IGCSE and future academic pursuits.


Coordinate exhibitions, competitions, and showcases.

Studio & Resource Management


Supervise art studios, D&T workshops, and digital design facilities.


Ensure safe and effective utilization of equipment and materials.


Handle departmental budgets and procurement processes.

Community & Leadership Engagement


Establish partnerships with artists, designers, and professionals from the creative industry.


Maintain effective communication with parents and the school community.


Contribute to school leadership and strategic planning efforts.

The Ideal Candidate:

● A visionary and energetic educator with substantial expertise in Design & Technology, specifically in Resistant Materials and Graphic Products, who can weave design thinking into the broader Art & Design curriculum.

● Proficient in teaching Technical Drawing and guiding students from KS3 through IGCSE, ensuring robust foundations in both creative and technical skills.

● Capable of designing, leading, and implementing an innovative Art & Design curriculum that merges fine art, design principles, and practical D&T applications to inspire and engage students.

● Experience with Cambridge IGCSE is preferred; a readiness to pursue training and professional development where necessary is crucial.

● An inspiring and strategic leader who can mentor staff, cultivate a culture of creativity and excellence, and elevate student achievement in Art, Design, and Technology.

Education Requirements:

A Bachelor's degree in the relevant subject area along with a postgraduate teaching qualification is required. A Master's degree is preferred.
