About This Role

Key Responsibilities

The Assistant Principal – Secondary plays an essential role in delivering academic and operational guidance for the Secondary School (Years 7 to 13). This role is aligned with the school’s vision, upholds excellence in teaching and learning, promotes student well-being, and cultivates a positive school environment within a diverse, international context.

1. Academic Leadership

- Oversee the implementation and evaluation of the secondary curriculum, ensuring alignment with the Cambridge curriculum and institutional policies.

- Support Heads of Department (HOD) and teachers in the adoption of high-quality teaching practices through classroom observations, constructive feedback, and professional coaching.

- Spearhead initiatives related to curriculum development, assessment strategies, and data-informed decision-making.

- Assist in the preparation for examinations, moderation of assessments, and the reporting processes.

- Facilitate the efficient daily operation of the department, collaborating with the Deputy Principal to manage staff coverage.

- Prepare departmental budgets and track financial expenditures.

- Ensure that all planning and resource allocation decisions are centered on enhancing student learning.

- Participate in regular meetings with the school leadership team (SLT) and attend secondary and whole school meetings as necessary.

2. Teaching & Learning

- Promote a school climate that fosters learning and encourages high levels of student achievement.

- Design and implement effective learning programs and instructional strategies that address the diverse needs of all students while supporting constructive timetabling.

- Advocate for best practices in teaching and learning throughout the institution.

- Contribute to the formulation of school curriculum and assessment policies.

- Establish mechanisms for tracking individual student progress and ensure consistent communication with parents regarding their children’s academic growth.

- Collaborate with the Principal and Deputy Principal to assess the effectiveness of teaching and learning across the school and to develop plans for improvement.

- Work alongside the school leadership team to ensure that operational requirements are effectively integrated with academic programs and initiatives.

3. Management – People & Teams

- Assist the Deputy Principal in managing the supervision, evaluation, and professional development of secondary teaching staff.

- Foster collaboration through departmental meetings, professional learning communities, and interdisciplinary projects.

- Support the recruitment, onboarding, and mentoring processes for secondary school staff.

4. Communication

- Ensure effective communication with students, staff, parents, and colleagues.

- Implement all school policies with a comprehensive understanding of their foundational principles.

5. Organizational and Administrative Management

- Aid in the daily management of the secondary section, including scheduling, timetabling, and planning events.

- Ensure compliance with school policies, safeguarding protocols, and accreditation standards.

- Support school-wide initiatives, strategic goals, and continuous improvement efforts.

6. Student Management & Well-being

- Manage student discipline, attendance, and behavior in accordance with school policies.

- Collaborate with counselors, year leaders, and teachers to enhance pastoral systems and student well-being initiatives.

- Address issues raised by parents and students in a professional and constructive manner.

Job Specification

Years of Experience

- A minimum of 3-5 years of proven leadership experience in a similar or related capacity.

- At least 8-10 years of relevant teaching experience, ideally within an international school environment.

- Familiarity with the Cambridge curriculum is highly desirable.

Education

- A Bachelor’s degree in Education/Teaching or an equivalent qualification, along with postgraduate training in education.

- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development pertinent to the role.

- PGDE and/or PGCE qualifications are preferred.

- A Teacher’s License (NIE certification) is also preferred.

- Possess a deep understanding of the secondary school curriculum.

- Demonstrate strong leadership and strategic planning capabilities, with the ability to plan, implement, and advance educational initiatives and school objectives.

Professional Qualifications / Job License

Compensation

£28,000 - £45,000 + Expat Benefits
