Job Purpose

• Champion multilingualism as a cognitive, linguistic, and cultural asset, ensuring the effective implementation of the whole-school MLL policy while promoting cultural inclusivity and supporting English language acquisition.

• Advocate for an asset-based approach to multilingualism, playing a pivotal role in ensuring that all multilingual learners can access, engage with, and succeed across the curriculum.

• Collaborate closely with the Multilingual Learning Leader to enhance MLL services.

• Optimize the academic growth of multilingual learners by providing top-notch teaching and learning in English support.

• Partner with classroom teachers, specialists, parents, external agencies, and other stakeholders to assist multilingual learners.

• Deliver customized language interventions, offer expert insights on language acquisition strategies, and contribute to an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

• Cultivate positive self-esteem and supportive relationships for all students, grounded in respect and mutual trust.

• Foster a constructive, purposeful, and professional working environment that encourages collaboration and challenge while appreciating individual contributions to the success of the school.

• Advocate for equal opportunities for all, irrespective of race, religion, or gender, and promote excellence, resourcefulness, and perseverance.

• Exemplify and promote best practices in the teaching and learning of MLL.

Duties and Responsibilities

Overall Responsibilities:

• Actively support the vision, ethos, culture, and policies of the school.

• Uphold high standards across all facets of school life, particularly in student progress in English language.

• Inspire and motivate students, teachers, and other staff members.

• Adhere to the professional responsibilities outlined in the Alice Smith Staff Code of Conduct.

• Contribute to a school culture that is positive, purposeful, and professional.

• Serve as a point of contact for parents.

• Commit to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Participate in the extracurricular life of the school.

Teaching and Learning

• Exhibit excellence in teaching by planning, preparing, and delivering well-organized, clearly presented MLL lessons and/or targeted one-on-one and group interventions tailored for multilingual learners to maximize their learning progress and English language development.

• Ensure that the classroom environment is stimulating and conducive to learning.

• Foster enthusiasm for the subject being taught and motivate all students to reach their potential.

• Encourage high standards of behavior by promoting a positive, proactive approach to study and building strong relationships with students.

• Provide high-quality, accurate, constructive, and targeted feedback to parents during Parents' Evenings, in school reports, meetings, and communications.

• Engage positively in meetings, follow policies, and contribute to the effective and efficient operation of the school.

• Assess, record, monitor, and review the progress of MLL students through data tracking in line with school guidelines to provide precise information to parents and school leaders as needed.

• Collaborate with class teachers and specialists to co-plan, co-teach, and implement effective language acquisition strategies, including adaptive teaching and scaffolding lessons/units according to individual student needs.

• Assist teachers in assessing language development and developing subject-specific resources that focus on vocabulary, writing skills, and reading comprehension.

• Actively participate in preparing and leading MLL provision across the Primary School throughout the day to support student progress.

• Develop, maintain, and share materials and resources throughout the Primary School to achieve exceptional learning outcomes for all students.

• Provide advice on resource allocation to ensure effective MLL support.

Other Responsibilities

• Respect the needs of colleagues and the school in terms of cooperation, collegiality, deadlines, and team cohesion.

• Promote professional dialogue, share ideas about teaching and learning, and assist other teachers in enhancing good practices and new approaches to multilingual learning.

• Positively engage in and contribute to INSET activities offered by the school. Actively participate in cross-curricular initiatives and extracurricular activities.

• Get involved in new initiatives within the school as part of ongoing professional development. Take an interest in maintaining subject knowledge, learning networks, and current educational research.

• Represent the school in professional networks and educational forums to stay updated on advancements in multilingualism.

• Lead whole-school training efforts, equipping staff with essential skills and strategies to effectively support multilingual learners.

• Take seriously the duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of students.

Education, Training, and Qualifications

• A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education along with additional professional accredited qualifications for teaching multilingual learners.

• Evidence of relevant and challenging continuing professional development.

Knowledge and Experience

• At least two years of teaching experience.

• Experience teaching multilingual learners in international settings and familiarity with translanguaging.

• Experience collaborating with teams to support class teachers in adapting their curriculum and teaching for multilingual learners.

• Familiarity with and up-to-date knowledge of all relevant safeguarding policies and practices.

• Knowledge and experience in effectively utilizing IT to promote student learning.

Desirable


• Proficiency in the languages spoken by the Alice Smith MLL community (e.g., Mandarin, Japanese).

• Experience teaching conceptual understandings.

• Experience in inquiry-based learning.

Review:

The responsibilities associated with this position may evolve over time in response to the changing needs of the school.

This job description will be reviewed annually. The performance of the MLL teacher in these key areas of responsibility will be reviewed throughout the year as part of the school’s line management process.

This job description is to be followed in addition to the WS Teacher JD. The MLL Teacher is typically expected to teach 80% of the week.

Compensation

£30,000 - £45,000+ (Regional Equivalent)
