JOB DESCRIPTION

SCIENCE TEACHER

Starting on August 31, 2026, we will prioritize applicants who are a) academically versatile, b) enthusiastic and experienced in co-curricular activities, c) dedicated to engaging with our boarding community, and d) possess experience in a boarding school setting.

We offer a competitive salary package and a supportive, family-friendly work environment. This role entails a teaching load equivalent to a 1.0 FTE, with a salary range of $71,673 to $114,105 per year (based on current grids and subject to increases for 2026-2027). The final salary will depend on placement within the teaching grid.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to both the Head of Academics & Leadership and the Academic Department Head, teachers are expected to:

• Manage an assigned class load while adhering to all of Shawnigan’s preparation, planning, and reporting protocols typical in the teaching profession;

• Collaborate with colleagues within and across departments to design and deliver engaging content that prepares students for their post-secondary journeys;

• Provide support to students through tutorials or enrichment opportunities as needed;

• Participate fully in the Shawnigan program and contribute to “The Shawnigan Journey.”

REQUIREMENTS

• Legally authorized to work in Canada, or if not, possess the necessary visa and permissions to work legally in Canada;

• Hold a post-secondary degree in Science, Education, or a related field that aligns with the Shawnigan academic curriculum;

• Possess or be eligible to apply for a British Columbia Teaching Certificate (Independent or Certificate of Qualification) prior to April 2026;

• Experience teaching Science to grades 8-12;

• Experience teaching Environmental Science at grades 11 and 12;

• Demonstrated experience incorporating First Peoples’ Principles of Learning into teaching practice is an asset;

• Familiarity with research-based pedagogies such as inquiry-based learning, universal design for learning, and standards-based assessment is an asset;

• Experience working with teenagers from diverse backgrounds;

• Experience in a boarding school environment is an asset;

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills;

• A proven track record of professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, dependability, and reliability.
