About This Role

Are you looking to join a team dedicated to establishing a premier IB school in one of Japan's most beautiful cities?

Kumamoto International School is an accredited IB World School, offering both the Diploma Programme (DP) and Primary Years Programme (PYP). We are in search of a qualified ENGLISH LANGUAGE & LITERATURE teacher for our PYP and MYP programs. The ideal candidate will thrive in a collaborative, team-focused environment and should have a proven track record of delivering outstanding educational results at the Junior High and High School levels.

Our mission is clear: to cultivate a world-class educational experience while enjoying the journey together. We believe in fostering an environment where all members of our school community take pride in being part of our vision.

About Kumamoto International School:
Located in Kumamoto, on Kyushu Island in western Japan, KIS is a fully accredited International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. Our preschool division, Picasso, was established in 2003, with our primary school opening in 2018 and our junior high school launching in April 2023. We are excited about our newly constructed, expansive campus for our primary, junior high, and high school divisions, which will open in April 2025. As we continue to grow, numerous opportunities for advancement will arise as we introduce additional divisions and grade levels.

Are we the right match for you?

You:
- Prefer to work in a smaller school where you can grow alongside the institution.
- Are unwavering in your dedication to achieving exceptional educational outcomes for students.
- Seek a school that embodies your commitment to excellence.
- Desire to live and work in a smaller Japanese city (~750,000 residents) that offers a high quality of life and a lower cost of living compared to Japan's major urban centers.
- Appreciate the idea of walking or biking to work instead of navigating crowded public transport.
- Want to be part of a developing school that presents various growth opportunities in diverse roles.
- Aspire to be a “change agent,” positively influencing the lives of your students.
- Value the prospect of receiving coaching to enhance your teaching skills.
- Enjoy being part of a collaborative team that strives for remarkable educational outcomes for students.
- Respect Japanese culture, values, traditions, and ways of thinking.
- Prefer to avoid feeling like just another employee in a large organization.

Us:
- Are committed to ongoing improvement as we aim to be the best international school in Japan.
- Believe that one exceptional teacher can be more impactful than multiple average ones.
- Work to foster a close-knit team of professionals dedicated to achieving the best educational outcomes for our students.
- Understand that a great teacher can leave a lasting impression on their students' lives.
- Provide unwavering support to our teachers, enabling them to excel in their roles.
- Mentor our educators to become master teachers who transform the lives of their students.

Kumamoto, home to one of Japan's most renowned castles, offers an exceptional quality of life with clean air and water, beautiful weather (over 300 sunny days a year), and easy access to stunning natural landscapes. Nature enthusiasts will find plenty to love in Kumamoto. Additionally, the active volcano Mt. Aso is just an hour away, and Osaka is accessible in three hours via direct bullet train, making weekend trips a breeze. The region's farmers provide fresh produce and meat at prices significantly lower than in Tokyo.

Since our inception 22 years ago with the Picasso Preschool, we have grown to a team of 60 staff members across all divisions. Our aim is to recruit exceptional talent and cultivate a strong team. Our philosophy is simple: we hire hardworking, kind individuals rather than trying to teach people to be nice and diligent. Our longest-serving Japanese staff members have been with us for 20 years, while many other teachers have also been with us for over a decade. Staff often socialize outside of work, and the school provides a wonderful foundation for settling into life in Japan and forming friendships. We prioritize teamwork and cooperation, ensuring that support is always available when needed. You will never feel like just another cog in a large machine. Furthermore, as our school expands, there are ample opportunities for teachers to continue developing their skills and taking on new roles.

To help our educators adapt to life in Japan, we offer complimentary Japanese language classes on campus.

Our school is characterized by a vibrant, positive, and energetic atmosphere. We invite only those teachers who wish to actively contribute to this environment to apply! If this resonates with you, you will thrive here!
