About This Role

ROLE SPECIFICATION

As the Head of Computer Science, you will be a vital part of the College's digital innovation journey. Your role will encompass significant contributions to discussions regarding the implementation of AI across the College, playing a key part in decision-making processes. Your expertise will be essential, whether you are proposing ideas for college-wide policies or demonstrating best practices.

At BCVN, collaboration among educators is a fundamental aspect of our daily operations. Students at BCVN engage in a variety of co-curricular activities inside and outside the College, including robotics, and we are well-equipped with computing resources such as Lego robotics kits.

Reports to: Deputy Head Academic

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Foster a positive team environment.
  • Exemplify and promote high standards in teaching and learning.
  • Introduce innovative initiatives and spearhead collaborative projects to maintain a diverse and stimulating curriculum, enabling students to explore the subject and grow within your department.
  • Ensure all department members motivate each student to achieve their academic best through engaging and personalized teaching, tailored challenges, diligent record-keeping, and follow-up.
  • Monitor and assess the progress of all students in your department.
  • Collaborate with your departmental team on setting and addressing individual student needs.
  • Manage the annual review of all departmental policies, handbooks, and documentation, including staffing, curriculum plans, schemes of work, timetables, job descriptions, budget, INSET, assessments, meetings, visits/visitors, and risk assessments.
  • Ensure that Schemes of Work are current and in place.
  • Oversee examinations and assessments in your department.
  • Lead the future development of your department within the College.
  • Manage the departmental budget and procurement of all equipment.
  • Ensure your department contributes to the College website, social media, and publications as necessary.
  • Supervise and proofread reports.
  • Oversee your Departmental Development Plan and contribute to the College’s Self Evaluation and Development Plan.
  • Attend all required meetings and INSET, participating in Heads of Department gatherings.
  • Conduct meetings and organize and lead regular departmental meetings.
  • Stay updated on the latest educational practices and philosophies, as well as developments within your subject area.
  • Maintain close connections and regular communication with the professional organizations related to your department.
  • Serve as an exemplary role model in all areas of school life and demonstrate outstanding practice for colleagues.

Teaching and Learning

  • Encourage every student to achieve their academic potential through engaging and personalized instruction, tailored challenges, diligent record-keeping, and follow-up.
  • Adhere to all College policies, including those related to marking and assessment, teaching and learning, and reporting.
  • Develop and share schemes of work and resources using in-house formats.
  • Assist with covering for colleagues as needed.
  • Attend all required meetings and INSET.
  • Prepare, invigilate, and assess internal and external tests and examinations as required.

Pastoral

  • Be aware of and act in accordance with all policies regarding child safeguarding.
  • Work within a house structure as a Tutor for a specific year group.
  • Show a genuine interest in each child's personal and family circumstances, nurturing their personal and social development.
  • Actively promote the social, moral, and cultural development of students.
