JOB DESCRIPTION
LEARNING CENTRE TEACHER
Starting on August 31, 2026, preference will be given to qualified candidates who are a) academically versatile, b) possess experience, expertise, and enthusiasm for co-curricular activities, c) are dedicated to enhancing our boarding community, and d) have prior experience in a boarding school setting.
We offer an attractive compensation package along with a supportive, family-oriented workplace. The teaching load for this role is equivalent to a 1.0 FTE, with an annual salary ranging from $71,673 to $114,105 (based on current year grids and subject to increase for 2026-2027). The actual salary offered will align with the placement on the teaching grid.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting directly to both the Head of Academics & Leadership and the Academic Department Head, teachers are expected to:
• Carry a designated class load while adhering to all of Shawnigan’s preparation, planning, and reporting protocols as expected in the teaching profession;
• Collaborate with colleagues within the department and across other departments to create and deliver content that challenges our students and equips them for their post-secondary pathways;
• Be available to assist students in their learning through tutorials or enrichment opportunities;
• Manage a caseload of up to 25 IEPs and support those students during designated learning support blocks;
• Identify and apply new trends or ideas in special educational practices;
• Contribute to the formulation of policies regarding IEP and learning support practices at Shawnigan Lake School;
• Assist in developing assessment policies for students requiring accommodations;
• Ensure that special educational services comply with ministry policies;
• Support the Learning Centre Director with administrative tasks and coordination;
• Engage in the complete Shawnigan program and the delivery of “The Shawnigan Journey.”
REQUIREMENTS
• Legally eligible to work in Canada or, if not, possess all necessary visas and permissions to work legally in Canada;
• Hold a post-secondary degree in Education or a related field that aligns with the Shawnigan academic program;
• Be in possession of, or eligible to apply for, a British Columbia Teaching Certificate (Independent or Certificate of Qualification) before April 2026;
• A minimum of two (2) years of teaching experience in a special educational setting, preferably at the secondary level;
• Preference for experience supporting senior-level mathematics (Grades 10–12);
• Ability to assist students with senior math coursework;
• Experience in managing and implementing IEPs;
• Demonstrated experience incorporating First Peoples’ Principles of Learning into your practice is a plus;
• Familiarity with research-based and current pedagogical approaches, such as inquiry-based learning, universal design for learning, and standards-based assessment is an asset;
• Experience working with teenagers from diverse backgrounds;
• Experience in a boarding school environment is advantageous;
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
• Proven track record of professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, dependability, and reliability.
