JOB DESCRIPTION

MATH TEACHER

Starting August 31, 2026, preference will be given to qualified candidates who a) demonstrate academic versatility, b) bring enthusiasm and experience to co-curricular activities, c) are committed to enriching our boarding campus and community, and d) possess prior boarding school experience.

We provide a competitive compensation package along with a supportive, family-oriented work environment. The teaching load for this position is equivalent to 1.0 FTE, with a salary range between $71,673 and $114,105 per year (based on current grids and subject to increase for 2026-2027). The actual salary will be determined based on placement within the teaching grid.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to both the Head of Academics & Leadership and the Academic Department Head, teachers are expected to:

• Manage an assigned class load while fulfilling all of Shawnigan’s preparation, planning, and reporting requirements as outlined in the teaching profession;

• Collaborate with other department members and across disciplines to create and deliver content that engages our students and equips them for their post-secondary journeys;

• Provide support to students in their learning through tutorials or enrichment opportunities;

• Participate actively in the comprehensive Shawnigan program and the delivery of “The Shawnigan Journey.”

REQUIREMENTS

• Legally authorized to work in Canada or, if not, possess all necessary visas and permissions to work legally in Canada;

• Hold a post-secondary degree in Mathematics, Education, or a related field that aligns with the Shawnigan academic program;

• Possess or be eligible to apply for a British Columbia Teaching Certificate (Independent or Certificate of Qualification) before April 2026;

• Experience teaching Mathematics at the grade 8 and 9 levels;

• Experience teaching Foundations of Mathematics & Pre-calculus 10;

• Experience teaching Pre-calculus for grades 11 & 12;

• Ability to teach Statistics or Calculus is an asset;

• Ability to teach AP Pre-Calculus, AP Statistics, or AP Calculus is an asset;

• Ability to teach Computer Science is an asset;

• Demonstrated experience integrating First Peoples’ Principles of Learning into your practice is an asset;

• Familiarity with research-based and contemporary pedagogies such as inquiry-based learning, universal design for learning, and standards-based assessment is an asset;

• Experience working with teenagers from diverse backgrounds;

• Experience in a boarding environment is an asset;

• Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills;

• Have a proven track record of professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, dependability, and reliability.
