About the Academic English Pathway
The Academic English Pathway (AEP) is a comprehensive, immersive academic English program tailored for non-native English speakers entering Years 5–8 (Ages 10–14).
This year-long initiative provides students with the necessary English language skills, academic abilities, and subject knowledge essential for a successful transition into mainstream classes. The curriculum is crafted by the AEP Curriculum Committee and aligns with AISM’s educational frameworks.
Who Are We Looking For
We seek a dynamic, student-focused educator who is enthusiastic about teaching Mathematics and Science to English language learners. You will present curriculum content using a content-based language instruction method, enhancing students’ academic English proficiency in these subjects. Additionally, you will instruct specific English acquisition skills (Grammar, Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) as part of the AEP team.
You are collaborative, flexible, and dedicated to the rigorous nature of the program. Recognizing that language acquisition is a collective responsibility, you employ creative, inquiry-based techniques to make content accessible for learners at various proficiency levels. Job Description
The Mathematics and Science Instructor is a reflective educator who employs content-based language instruction methods to foster positive learning environments that engage and challenge all students, aiding them in developing both their academic English and subject knowledge. The instructor will teach Mathematics and Science, co-teach core English skills across the AEP, and serve as a Staff Mentor to a designated group of students.
Role & Responsibilities
The Mathematics and Science Instructor will:
• Provide engaging, well-structured Mathematics and Science lessons that incorporate English language development
• Utilize the AEP content-based language instruction approach, adapting to diverse English proficiency levels and learning needs
• Ensure comprehensive understanding and application of the approved AEP curriculum within their teaching domains
• Prepare, collect, grade, return, and organize assessment tasks, tests, and examinations to a high standard
• Collaborate with designated students to track and support their progress according to individual learning objectives
• Prepare student reports and progress updates punctually and to a high quality
• Stay informed about curriculum developments and relevant issues in Mathematics, Science, and EAL pedagogy
• Work closely with the AEP Program Leader to ensure curricula and programs meet high standards and are fit for purpose
• Assist in the ongoing assessment, monitoring, and enhancement of programs to maintain quality
• Keep accurate records, registers, mark books, and database entries in a timely manner
• Respond efficiently to parent communications and student inquiries within expected time frames
• Employ a variety of teaching methodologies, including the innovative use of Information Technologies
• Uphold appropriate standards of classroom management and behavior according to School policy
• Create a caring and nurturing classroom atmosphere for all students
• Act as a Staff Mentor for a designated group of students, supporting their well-being, adaptation, and academic progress
• Provide detailed weekly progress reports to the families of designated student mentees
• Actively engage in the co-curricular life of the School and promote student participation in activities that enhance language learning and socialization
• Support AEP online and blended learning programs through content creation, teaching responsibilities, and curriculum development
• Attend morning briefings, staff meetings, and professional development sessions as needed
• Establish effective working relationships with colleagues and parents
• Participate in all facets of school life and support holistic education
• Carry out any additional duties assigned by the AEP Program Leader or Head of School
Qualifications & Skills
• A relevant degree in Mathematics, Science, or Education, along with a teaching qualification (or equivalent)
• TESOL qualifications or an equivalent certification
• At least three years of experience teaching EAL/ESL students
• Proven experience as a class teacher at upper primary or secondary school levels
• Familiarity with content-based language instruction or sheltered instruction methodologies, e.g., SIOP (preferred)
• Experience with differentiated instruction and personalized learning
• Background in student mentoring and pastoral care
• Experience in an international school setting (preferred)
• Higher degree or recognized professional qualification (preferred)
• Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development
• Strong interpersonal and teamwork abilities
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
• Proficient in using school systems, databases, communication platforms, and educational technology
• Fluent in English and possesses personal experience studying another language; proficiency in Mandarin, Korean, or Japanese is preferred
