English Teacher

English Teacher and Literacy Lead + TLR

We are seeking a dedicated English/Media teacher who will also be our school’s literacy lead.

Who We Are:

The English and Media Team:

Our English department consists of a hard-working team who collaborate with good humour to achieve the best possible results for students while helping them to explore the human condition. Last year, we achieved an excellent set of results in English, with a combined 80% achieving GCSE grades 9-4, 66% 9-5 and 28% 9-7, but we want to go further.

The Literacy Team:

Literacy and reading are a key focus of the school’s development plan. At Farnham Heath End School (FHES), all students in Years 7-9 use Sparx Reader at home as their English home learning. Last year, we launched a new programme of reading intervention in Year 7, where, using diagnostic data from the New Group Reading Test, we ran individual and small group reading recovery sessions during tutor time. We also launched a tutor reading programme in Year 7, which we are seeking to expand into Year 8. The data is clear that our reading recovery programme works: students made above-average reading progress last year, and this was especially true for our Pupil Premium and SEND students. We are looking for a leader to embed this fully and take it even further.

What you’ll do:

1. Make a difference to the outcomes of children at FHES
2. Lead the development and delivery of our reading and literacy vision
3. Collaborate with our Librarian, who sits at the heart of our school, and other colleagues, to champion reading for pleasure and improved reading outcomes for all
4. Implement, track, evaluate and improve a whole-school literacy and reading strategy

1. A skilled teacher with a love for English and/or Media Studies
2. A determined and creative person who has, or desires, leadership experience
3. A person with a strong knowledge of literacy and literacy programmes in schools
