Position Overview
• Previous teaching experience in the UK is preferred.
• A minimum of two years of experience teaching AL/IGCSE/AP in the relevant subject is required.
• Ability to teach motivated, high-achieving students.
• A degree in the subject area is essential.
• A teaching qualification (such as PGCE or equivalent) is required.
Key Responsibilities
• Create and deliver lessons aligned with the Scheme of Work, integrating various learning activities.
• Design and administer assessments following departmental guidelines, ensuring timely reporting that meets standards.
• Continuously assess student performance, providing constructive feedback and developing appropriate evaluations to monitor progress and identify improvement areas.
• Collaborate with colleagues to cultivate a positive and cooperative work environment, sharing resources and best practices.
• Potential opportunities to teach AP English as our AP program expands.
• Participate in teaching RPQ (projects) and GNT (Gifted and Talented).
About SCIE
We are a high school offering the UK curriculum, including Cambridge International AS/AL & IGCSE, primarily to Chinese students preparing for international university pathways. Since 2025, we have also introduced an AP program, creating opportunities for teachers interested in AP subjects.

• Examinations offered include AS/AL, IGCSE (Cambridge International and AQA), and AP (College Board).
• Day and boarding school – teachers do not hold boarding responsibilities and have no evening or night duties.

Department Overview:
The English Department has been recently organized to reflect a standard British high school model, consisting of 25 full-time teachers. Our 2025/26 intake (UK Year 10) will prepare for IGCSE Language and Literature over two years. Senior students will be working towards the Oxford International AQA in Language and Literature. Additionally, we offer an extended two-year AS English Language and Literature course. SCIE English teachers are encouraged to pursue their individual interests outside of the standard curriculum, with various student enrichment initiatives and English-related clubs available.
In the last two years, SCIE English students have achieved CAIE ‘Top of China’ and ‘High Achievement’ awards in AS and AL Literature and Language. We are seeking talented English educators with experience at both lower and upper Secondary levels, aiming to build upon our successes.
Students
• Academically driven and motivated.
• Students complete IGCSE exams at the end of Grade 2, then study 5/6 subjects at AS and 4/5 at AL (including English) or choose the AP curriculum.
• Typical international exam results reflect average grades of A/A* across the school.
• The 2025 cohort received 41 offers from Oxbridge, with over 90% of students applying to UK universities obtaining offers from the top 10 institutions.
• US university offers include prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Chicago, Johns Hopkins, Duke, Columbia, and Cornell.
• Students excel in a variety of subjects, including Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Languages, Science, and Mathematics.
• Class sizes are limited to 26 for IGCSE and 24 for AS/A Level.
• A wide range of extracurricular activities, with over 200 clubs led by both staff and students.
Schedule
• Working days: Monday – Friday, 07:50 – 16:40 (with a 07:30 start on Mondays and an early finish at 15:00 on Fridays).
• The standard teaching schedule consists of 24 x 40-minute periods per week (approximately 50% of the timetable).
• Teachers enjoy 6 fixed periods weekly during which their presence is not required.
• Extracurricular Activity – 1 hour per week for ECA (16:30 – 17:30).
• Extensive opportunities for professional development are available, both online and in-person.
• Holiday schedule includes 1 week for October China National Day, 2 weeks for Christmas, 3 weeks for Chinese New Year, public holidays, and a summer break from mid-June to early August.
Pastoral Care
At SCIE, we place great importance on pastoral care. All classroom educators play a role in supporting the holistic well-being of students, ensuring their safety and sense of belonging during their time at the college.
• Form tutor responsibilities – most teachers will be assigned a form group of around 20 students, requiring regular individual mentoring meetings, form time sessions, and weekly PSHE lessons. As the primary contact for students, form tutors are expected to understand their tutees beyond academic matters. This role comes with an additional allowance.
• Teachers without a form tutor assignment may still be expected to take on additional pastoral duties as necessary.
• Pastoral professional development – in addition to annual safeguarding training, there are further opportunities to enhance your skills in this area and contribute to school-wide pastoral initiatives.
