Deputy SENCO - Falkland Islands Schools
About This Role
The Falkland Islands Department of Education is seeking a dedicated, enthusiastic, and experienced Deputy Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator (Deputy SENCo) to join our team in August 2026. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work alongside the SENCO in leading, managing, developing, and maintaining high-quality provisions for special educational needs. The role involves effectively utilizing resources to promote excellent teaching and remarkable progress for students aged 3 to 16 across the Falkland Island Schools.
As a value-driven organization, we hold high expectations for both students and staff. Our guiding principles—Respect, Resilience, and Curiosity—shape our approach.
Our Primary division, comprising the Infant Junior School and Camp Education (IJS&CE), serves 300 students aged 3 to 11, primarily based at the main school site located in Stanley, the capital. In addition, 20 primary students in rural areas attend smaller satellite schools or receive home-based education. The Secondary division, known as the Falkland Islands Community School (FICS), caters to 220 students within the 11-16 age group.
Leadership is provided by an Executive Headteacher, supported by a Principal for Primary and a Principal for Secondary. Our schools boast a committed team, including a SENCo, Deputy SENCo, senior leaders, middle leaders, teachers, and support staff, including Special Educational Needs educators and Learning Support Assistants. Students with special educational needs present various challenges, categorized into four main areas: cognition and learning; communication and interaction; sensory and/or physical needs; and social, emotional, and mental health needs. The SEND departments in both schools are well-equipped with ‘hub’ classrooms designed for students with complex special educational needs.
The Deputy SENCo will support the SENCo in managing all facets of provision and intervention strategies within both mainstream and specialized teaching environments for students aged 3 to 16. Our goal is to customize provisions to meet students' learning needs, ensuring that each student receives the necessary support and challenge to reach their full potential. We are looking for candidates with extensive experience and up-to-date knowledge in the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities field. The successful candidate will be part of a dedicated team and will collaborate across all educational settings. Working together across phases will enhance student outcomes and contribute to curriculum development for the 3-16 age range.
Our mission is to empower all students to achieve their potential, graduating as happy, curious, and well-rounded individuals equipped with the knowledge, skills, and qualifications for their next life chapter. The needs and achievements of our students remain at the heart of our endeavors.
We encourage applications for the Deputy SENCo role from individuals who:
- Inspire and motivate teachers and learning support assistants to make a meaningful difference by focusing on high-quality teaching and learning, ensuring that children with additional needs reach their potential.
