Assistant Head of Primary – Student Life
About This Role
The Hamilton International School is seeking a talented and dynamic Assistant Head of Primary: Student Life to provide both strategic and operational leadership throughout the Primary phase.
This role is crucial in creating an atmosphere where every student feels safe, valued, included, and empowered to grow socially, emotionally, and behaviorally within a positive and aspirational school culture.
Reporting to the Head of Primary, the Assistant Head: Student Life will lead pastoral systems, student support services, and parental involvement, working closely with educators and leaders to ensure the best possible outcomes for all students.
This position includes a 50% teaching commitment and a 50% leadership allocation.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee school-wide initiatives focused on student wellbeing and positive behavior.
- Monitor attendance and punctuality, implementing targeted interventions as necessary.
- Coordinate student support services, including Counseling, Inclusion/Learning Support, and EAL.
- Supervise Grade Level Leaders responsible for pastoral care along with Learning Assistants.
- Facilitate student transitions within Primary and across different divisions.
- Act as Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) for the Primary sector.
- Lead communication and meetings with parents regarding wellbeing, behavior, and attendance.
- Promote restorative and preventative strategies for supporting students.
- Organize assemblies, field trips, student leadership activities, and significant community events.
- Contribute to strategic planning, accreditation, and compliance with ISP, NEASC, and MoEHE standards.
- Encourage staff professional development in pastoral care and safeguarding issues.
- Exemplify and instruct high-quality classroom practices.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree with an accredited teaching qualification.
- A minimum of 3 years of leadership experience in a Primary or elementary environment.
- Proven record of success in leading teaching and learning, curriculum development, and assessment.
- Experience in coaching educators and facilitating professional learning.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong understanding of effective Primary pedagogy and curriculum design.
- Experience using student performance data (e.g., MAP) to drive improvement.
- Ability to lead and support subject and instructional teams.
- Outstanding communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- High proficiency in ICT, including Student Information Systems and assessment platforms.
- Experience in an American or American-international curriculum (preferred).
