About This Role

The College Counselor plays a vital role in developing and overseeing a program aimed at assisting students in grades 10-12 with their college planning initiatives. This includes preparing academically for college, meeting graduation and admission criteria, exploring college options, applying for financial aid, seeking scholarship opportunities, and preparing for standardized testing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead both individual and group sessions to guide students in developing their academic, career, and personal/social skills while collaborating with teachers and parents to set goals and plans.
  • Assist in the creation, production, and dissemination of school handbooks and associated materials.
  • Manage the administration of the PSAT and ACER assessments.
  • Contribute to the school newsletter periodically when applicable.
  • Keep records of students’ progress toward graduation by conducting credit evaluations.
  • Communicate graduation progress to students and parents through annual credit check letters.
  • Help in selecting appropriate academic courses, including IB or UNL options.
  • Create a guidebook featuring colleges and universities.
  • Organize and facilitate visits from college and university representatives to the school.
  • Coordinate the school’s participation in college fairs.
  • Act as an advocate for students during the college/university admissions process.
  • Lead workshops for students and their families on the college/university application process.
  • Update college and university catalogs and informational resources.
  • Provide group guidance on the college/university application process, covering aspects such as essay writing, admissions tests, extracurricular activities, and other essential requirements.
  • Share information regarding colleges and universities, including financial aid opportunities, scholarships, and summer study programs.
  • Arrange individual meetings with students and parents for college planning discussions.
  • Prepare required school documentation for college/university applications, such as transcripts and school profiles.
  • Write recommendation letters to accompany students' college/university applications.
  • Ensure that teachers submit their recommendations for students to colleges/universities by the established deadlines.
  • Assist students in selecting fields of study that align with their career goals.
  • Host informational evenings for parents, students, and faculty as necessary.
  • Provide support for the admissions process as needed.
