Crofton House School is on the lookout for an energetic Assistant Director who will offer strategic guidance, leadership, and support in pedagogical matters across various subjects, specifically targeting our intermediate/middle years program (Grades 4 - 7). This role requires a knowledgeable and experienced educator and leader who is adept at supporting both teachers and learners, employing strategies that resonate with the developmental needs of young girls. The Assistant Director, well-versed in educational research and best practices, will significantly contribute to the formulation and execution of our long-term strategic goals. Working closely with the Director of the Junior School and the Junior School Leadership Team, this individual will ensure coherence in key pedagogical practices throughout all Junior School programs, promoting a unified approach to deep learning and skills development. Although the primary focus is on Grades 4 to 7, some strategic initiatives will extend beyond the intermediate level. The ideal candidate will be open-minded, approachable, and capable of inspiring confidence and trust among all stakeholders, recognizing the importance of pedagogy in fostering a positive social and emotional learning environment, while applying a culturally competent perspective within our diverse community. Educational Leadership
● Collaborate with the Junior School Director to establish priorities aimed at improving teaching and learning within our Intermediate (Grades 4-5) and Middle School (Grades 6-7) programs, building on evidence-based, research-informed pedagogical practices.
● Develop, implement, and assess annual plans for Junior School professional development in alignment with the overall school strategy.
● Ensure that pedagogical practices are grounded in a thorough understanding of key elements, including social and emotional learning, inquiry-based education, competency-based learning, and differentiation through the perspective of whole child development.
● Oversee and enhance our systematic data analysis approach, focusing on foundational areas such as reading, writing, numeracy, and competency development.
● Ensure that assessment and reporting practices for Grades 4-7 are cohesive and centered on best practices, while giving careful thought to student growth and well-being.
● Supervise the development, implementation, and evaluation of new school-wide educational initiatives (JK-Grade 7) as appropriate, in consultation with the Junior School Director.
● Provide leadership for specialist curriculum areas, including Physical and Health Education and Languages (French, Spanish).
● Collaborate with the Junior School leadership team to create a pedagogical framework that meets the needs of the Senior School while building on Kindergarten to Grade 7 methodologies.

Mentorship
● Assist in the annual execution of the Teacher Professional Growth Plan (TPGP) in partnership with the Junior School leadership team.
● Enhance existing processes for classroom observations and sharing of insights.
● Contribute to the mentoring and guidance of new staff in collaboration with program coordinators.
● Design, implement, and evaluate collaborative professional learning models that promote autonomy and accountability while supporting a student-centered, evidence-based approach to teaching and learning.
● Stay informed about research and developments in pedagogy at local, national, and international levels, sharing relevant insights with staff, students, and parents as appropriate.

Organizational Leadership
● Partner with the Junior School Director to establish a student-centered schedule.
● Support the daily operations of the Middle School program alongside the program coordinator, including the yearly admissions process.
● Ensure synergy, alignment, and balance in Junior School programming and events, with special attention to our co-curricular and athletic programs.
● Participate in the recruitment of teachers and educators as related to this role.
● Collaborate with finance and administrative teams to allocate resources, prepare budgets, and manage staffing plans as needed.

Whole School Collaboration and Partnerships
● Work in collaboration with the Director of the Junior School and the CHS Learning Council on all aspects of school management, including inspection and accreditation preparation and overarching school strategic development.
● Collaborate with the Junior School Leadership Team to ensure an approach centered on the whole child in teaching and learning, informed by research and best practices in girl-centered education.
● Develop strategic professional partnerships within local, national, and international networks to enhance pedagogical practices at the school.
● Actively engage in community events, modeling positive relationships with parents, students, and staff while nurturing a strong sense of belonging for all community members.

Other Duties
● Teaching responsibilities aligned with skills and experience for up to 2 days per cycle as needed.
● Additional duties assigned based on the candidate's skills, abilities, interests, and the needs of the school.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience

Essential
● B.C. Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate or qualification criteria for Independent School Certification.
● A strong understanding of the learning needs of Junior School-aged girls, demonstrated through a record of excellent, evidence-based, and research-informed classroom practice.
● Experience in a school leadership position or proven evidence of related leadership experience.
● A comprehensive understanding of effective professional learning models and a commitment to ongoing professional development, including the ability to motivate and support teacher growth.
● Proven success in implementing new initiatives related to teaching and learning.
● A deep understanding of effective change processes, showing the ability to be innovative, flexible, and reflective.
● Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving capabilities, with experience in building positive relationships with administrators, teachers, parents, administrative staff, and community partners.
● A deep understanding of intercultural competencies necessary for effectively working within a diverse community.
● Knowledge of risk management, including mitigation strategies and crisis response.
● Strong organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.
● A collaborative and open demeanor, coupled with a passion for the teaching profession.
● Enthusiasm and readiness to engage fully in the varied life of the school community.

Desirable
● Experience in an independent school setting.
● Familiarity with the expectations of a selective girl-centered institution.
● Experience with the BC curriculum.

Compensation

£30,000 - £45,000+ (Regional Equivalent)
