Position Profile

• Prior experience in UK teaching is desirable.

• A minimum of 2 years teaching experience in AL/IGCSE/AP within the relevant subject area is essential.

• Capability to teach high-achieving students.

• A degree in Mathematics or a related field is required.

• A valid teaching qualification (PGCE, QTS, or an equivalent credential).

Specific Responsibilities of the Teaching Position

• Design and deliver lessons in accordance with the Scheme of Work, employing a variety of learning activities.

• Create and implement assessments that align with departmental standards, ensuring timely reports that fulfill expectations.

• Regularly assess student performance, provide constructive feedback, and develop effective assessments to monitor progress and identify areas for improvement.

• Collaborate with colleagues to promote a positive and supportive work environment, sharing resources and best practices.

• Opportunities are available for teaching AP Mathematics.

• Potential to instruct RPQ (projects) and GNT (Gifted and Talented) courses.

Brief Description of SCIE

Our high school, offering the UK curriculum (Cambridge International AS/AL & IGCSE), primarily serves Chinese students preparing for overseas studies. Since 2025, we have also launched an AP program, creating additional teaching opportunities across various subjects.

The College is dedicated to providing education in a challenging international environment that encourages academic excellence while fostering social responsibility, creativity, independence, and enthusiasm, ensuring students are well-equipped for their future.

• The admissions process is highly selective, including assessments in English and Mathematics.

• Instruction and communication are conducted in AS/AL English, with students achieving first-language proficiency, primarily studying AS/AL English language or literature at A1/A2 levels.

• The school has over 1800 students, focusing exclusively on high school education – UK Key Stages 4 & 5.

• Fully accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges in the US), and a regional member of FOBISIA and EARCOS.

• Examinations include AS/AL, IGCSE (Cambridge International and AQA), and AP (College Board).

Subject Department Introduction:

We welcome passionate educators to our Mathematics department. Due to the high caliber of our students, Mathematics is often taught one year ahead of standard cohorts, with IGCSE Mathematics/AS Mathematics (9709) covered in UK Year 10, and AS Mathematics in UK Year 11. The majority of students complete AL Mathematics in Year 12, with options to take AS or AL Further Mathematics in UK Year 13. The subject is widely popular, with nearly all students completing AS Mathematics, and approximately 96% advancing to A-Level. High achievement rates are significant, with over 80% of students scoring A/A* at A-Level. Each year, around half the cohort opts for Further Mathematics, with 60% achieving A/A* in that subject. On average, about 100 students apply for single or combined Mathematics courses at esteemed universities in the UK and the US, with many securing places in Mathematics programs at Oxbridge annually. This success is bolstered by regular extension classes designed to prepare students for the MAT and STEP examinations.

We seek educators capable of teaching up to AL Mathematics and Further Mathematics. Starting in August 2025, we aim to enhance our AP offerings, so we are also interested in candidates experienced in teaching AP Statistics or Calculus. Experience in delivering high-level Mathematics instruction, particularly in extension classes for Gifted and Talented students and preparing students for Oxbridge applications, will be a considerable advantage.

• Students complete IGCSE examinations at the end of G2, taking 5/6 subjects at AS and 4/5 at AL (including English) or following an AP curriculum.

• The average international exam results typically reflect grades of A/A* across the institution.

• The 2025 cohort received 41 offers from Oxbridge, with over 90% of UK applicants gaining acceptance from top 10 universities.

• US university acceptances include prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Chicago, Johns Hopkins, Duke, Columbia, and Cornell.

• Students excel across a range of subjects, including Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Languages, Science, and Mathematics.

• Class sizes are limited to 26 for IGCSE and 24 for AS/A Level.

• A broad range of extracurricular activities is offered, featuring over 200 clubs, led by both staff and students.

Schedule

• Working week: Monday – Friday, from 07:50 to 16:40 (with a 07:30 start on Mondays and an early finish at 15:00 on Fridays).

• Standard contact teaching time consists of 24 x 40-minute periods per week (approximately 50% timetable).

• Personal time includes 6 fixed periods per week when attendance at work is not required.

• Extra-Curricular Activity – 1 hour per week for ECA after school (16:30 – 17:30).

• CPD – A wide range of professional development opportunities is available, both online and in-person.

• Holidays – 1 week for the October China National Day holiday, 2 weeks for Christmas, 3 weeks for Chinese New Year, and additional Chinese public holidays, along with a summer holiday from mid-June to early August.

Pastoral

At SCIE, pastoral care is fundamental to our mission. Every classroom teacher plays an essential role in supporting the overall well-being of students, promoting safety, belonging, and wellness throughout their college experience.

• Form tutor role – Most classroom teachers will be expected to manage a form group of approximately 20 students, which includes regular mentoring sessions, form time with the group, and teaching a weekly PSHE lesson. As the primary contact for students, form tutors are responsible for building relationships with their tutees beyond the classroom. This role comes with an additional allowance.

• Teachers without a form tutor assignment may be required to undertake additional pastoral responsibilities as needed.

• Pastoral professional development – In addition to annual safeguarding training, there are further opportunities to enhance practice in this area and contribute to school-wide pastoral initiatives.
