We are seeking experienced educators for the role of Head of Individuals & Societies, with a commencement date in August 2026.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, develop, and inspire the Individuals & Societies department to provide an exceptional, inquiry-driven education that cultivates curiosity, critical thinking, and a true passion for the subject.
- Oversee the design and implementation of a cohesive I&S curriculum that is vertically and horizontally aligned, in accordance with IB philosophy and assessment standards.
- Foster and uphold a supportive, inclusive departmental environment that encourages high expectations, teamwork, and continual improvement.
- Mentor and assist teachers within the department through coaching, lesson observations, and professional dialogue to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.
- Ensure effective differentiation and inclusive strategies within the department to meet the diverse needs of all learners, including EAL students, those who are gifted, and students requiring additional support.
- Guide the strategic utilization of assessment data to monitor progress, inform intervention strategies, and elevate student achievement.
- Promote the meaningful incorporation of technology and innovative teaching methods to enhance engagement and deepen understanding of the subject matter.
- Collaborate with senior leadership and interdisciplinary teams to support school-wide initiatives, curriculum development, and strategic objectives.
- Actively communicate with parents and the broader community regarding curriculum issues, student progress, and departmental activities.
- Contribute to the wider school community through co-curricular programs, events, and academic enrichment opportunities.
- Embody and advocate for GEMS values and the IB Learner Profile, fostering professional development, reflective practices, and a culture of lifelong learning.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- An accredited professional teaching qualification at the degree level, such as B.Ed, PGCE, PGDE, or an equivalent qualification with a focus on Individuals & Societies.
- A minimum of 3-5 years of successful experience teaching Secondary I&S, demonstrating strong student outcomes and effective classroom practices.
- Proven capability or readiness to transition into curriculum and departmental leadership, including supporting colleagues, engaging in curriculum planning, and driving improvements.
- Experience teaching within an IB framework (MYP and/or DP) is preferred, though strong candidates from other international or national curricula will also be considered.
- A genuine enthusiasm for high-quality, inquiry-based I&S instruction, with the ability to inspire students and staff alike.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead collaboratively and foster positive relationships within the school community.
