The Opportunity (Overview of the role)
The Assistant Head of Sport plays a pivotal role in supporting the Director of Sport (DoS) in fostering a robust professional culture characterized by interdisciplinary teamwork and dynamic professional conversations. This position entails providing professional leadership and management in assigned areas by the DoS, ensuring that program staff operate effectively as a cohesive team, the quality of the program is exceptional, resources are utilized efficiently, learning standards are high, and there is a continuous pursuit of improvement. Creativity and innovation are integral to the team’s approach to teaching and learning, and a variety of competitive local and regional fixtures are scheduled throughout the academic year.
Responsibilities/duties:
As a key educational leader, the Assistant Head of Sport must exhibit effective leadership and management skills, motivating and challenging all staff and students to excel through:

Line Management Responsibilities:
The Assistant Head of Sport reports to the Director of Sport and will assist with specific areas of responsibility, which may include:
•
Leading designated program leads and sports coaches
•
Championing excellence in the sports program
•
Promoting celebration, achievement, and progression
•
Engaging with the wider community
Main Tasks:
•
Cultivate trust and confidence through personal practice and a proactive, solution-oriented approach to enhancing session delivery and sports offerings
•
Engage in proactive communication, collaborating with the DoS to ensure timely and clear information dissemination regarding sports programs, events, and fixtures
•
Encourage a high-quality professional dialogue, fostering collaboration and supporting both individual and team professional development
•
Assist the DoS in guiding the professional learning direction for the team, identifying and leveraging school-based and external professional development opportunities and integrating insights into training and support
•
Support both internal and external staff involved in the sports program by providing clear expectations, appropriate safeguarding training, communication channels, resources, and constructive feedback
•
Monitor performance actively and address issues as they arise; in collaboration with the DoS, clarify expectations, implement support measures, and establish clear improvement targets
•
Assist the DoS in overseeing the health and safety of physical learning environments and facilities, collaborate with Maintenance and SLT as necessary, and conduct risk assessments for all events, fixtures, and tournaments
•
Model exemplary teaching practices and a commitment to professional growth, actively seeking opportunities for pedagogical innovation, collaboration, and the sharing of best practices within the team
•
Support the DoS in ensuring the sports program is adequately resourced to meet the needs of all students, including preparing, presenting, and negotiating the annual sports program budget
•
Collaborate with the DoS and the Primary Head of Sport to facilitate arrangements for all SEASAC, FOBISIA, and AIMS entries, ensuring that team selections are based on fair and transparent criteria and each team has a dedicated coach
•
Assist in organizing local fixtures and tournaments
•
Support the House Leader in coordinating inter-house sports events as directed by the DoS
•
Aid the DoS in keeping notice boards and SOCS updated for students regarding all sports fixtures (including current team rosters, results, awards, photographs, and other relevant fixture information)
•
Assist the DoS in monitoring and enhancing student engagement and performance within the sports program
•
Celebrate student achievements through the school’s recognition and achievement frameworks
•
Support the DoS in effectively communicating all pertinent information to parents regarding school sports fixtures and competitions, including selection letters, newsletters, match reports, future updates, school presentations, phone calls, and problem-solving, while ensuring adherence to the parent code of conduct
•
Participate in and support school events and initiatives through active involvement and collaboration
•
Maintain the school's reputation and standing in the community at all times
•
Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, report any concerns, and take appropriate steps to maintain a safe environment
•
Demonstrate professionalism, cultural sensitivity, teamwork, and a dedication to continuous improvement.
