Role Overview
The Design and Technology Mentor will be tasked with delivering a stimulating and comprehensive Design and Technology curriculum that adheres to the Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 British National Curriculum. This position calls for a vibrant, innovative educator who is committed to hands-on, inquiry-driven learning and can ignite creativity and innovation in students.
The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with mentors, leaders, and families to foster an inclusive and engaging learning atmosphere where students gain confidence in design thinking, engineering concepts, problem-solving, and practical skills.
Reporting to the Head of Secondary, the Design and Technology Mentor will work alongside all teams to weave innovation and practical learning into the Citizens educational experience via our Problem Based Learning framework.
1. Teaching and Learning
- Design and implement high-quality lessons in Design and Technology that meet the standards of the British National Curriculum for Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3.
- Offer an interactive, hands-on learning experience that promotes creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
- Enhance learners' knowledge and skills in areas such as product design, resistant materials, electronics, CAD/CAM, and textiles.
- Utilize inquiry-based and project-based learning approaches to deepen students' comprehension of design processes and technological applications.
- Assist students in developing skills in technical drawing, prototyping, and manufacturing through practical tasks.
- Motivate learners to apply design thinking principles to real-life challenges, fostering innovation and adaptability.
- Embed sustainability and ethical design principles into the learning experiences.
- Differentiate instruction to ensure all students are appropriately challenged and supported to reach their potential.
2. Innovation and Technology Integration
- Encourage the use of emerging technologies, including 3D printing, robotics, and digital manufacturing tools, within the curriculum.
- Instruct students in the safe and efficient use of tools, machinery, and workshop equipment.
- Advocate for the incorporation of coding and digital design into project-based learning experiences.
- Stay informed about advancements in design and technology education and implement them in the classroom.
3. Assessment and Learner Development
- Evaluate student progress using various formative and summative assessment methods, maintaining high expectations for all learners.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to support student growth and improvement.
- Keep detailed records of student accomplishments, track progress, and effectively communicate with families regarding student development.
- Assist learners in creating portfolios that showcase their design and technology skills.
4. Contribution to School Community
- Collaborate with colleagues to create interdisciplinary learning experiences that link Design and Technology with other subjects.
- Lead or participate in extracurricular activities related to Design and Technology, such as clubs, competitions, or exhibitions.
- Support school-wide initiatives that promote sustainability, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
- Engage in professional development opportunities to continuously improve teaching practices.
Qualifications and Experience
- A BA, BEd, or PGCE in Design and Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) obtained through an accredited route.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development in education and technology.
- Experience and Attributes:
- At least two years of teaching experience in the British National Curriculum for Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3.
- Proven experience delivering inquiry-based and hands-on learning experiences.
- Strong grasp of design thinking, engineering concepts, and technological applications.
- Familiarity with CAD software, digital fabrication tools, and workshop machinery.
- Ability to motivate and engage students in a creative and dynamic learning environment.
- A dedication to the Citizens approach to learning, ensuring that innovation and practical skills are integral to everyday educational experiences.
