Head of Music with additional specialism.
About This Role
Lead the Harmony: Head of Music (with Second Subject Specialism)
The British West Indies Collegiate (BWIC) is seeking an innovative, forward-thinking, and exceptionally talented educator to lead our Music Department. This pivotal leadership role is open at the premier independent school in the Turks and Caicos Islands, offering a distinctive opportunity to shape the musical landscape for our passionate student body.
At BWIC, we prioritize a holistic educational approach, and we are looking for a Head of Music who can integrate classical music traditions with contemporary creativity while also enhancing the wider academic environment of our Collegiate.
The Role
- Departmental Leadership: Take full responsibility for the Music curriculum for Key Stage 3 and the Cambridge (CAIE) IGCSE syllabus, ensuring high standards in performance, composition, and musical analysis.
- Orchestrate Excellence: Lead and develop our signature ensembles, including the Symphony Band and our celebrated Steel-pan Ensemble, while coordinating school-wide concerts and community events.
- Interdisciplinary Versatility: At BWIC, we value the "polymath" educator. While your main responsibility will be overseeing the Music Department, the ability to teach a second subject is highly desirable. We particularly encourage applicants who can offer Media Studies, Drama, or a Foreign Language (Spanish).
- Creative Mentorship: Guide students in mastering the intricacies of music theory and the freedom of performance, fostering the "quiet strength" and confidence that define a BWIC Spartan.
- Community Engagement: Play an essential role in nurturing the welcoming, "extended family" atmosphere of the school, contributing to house music competitions and the overall development of our 195 students.
The Ideal Candidate
- Qualified Leader: Must hold a recognized teaching qualification (PGCE or equivalent) alongside a strong Honors degree in Music or a related Performing Arts field.
- Musical Specialist: A proficient musician with advanced skills in at least one instrument (or voice) and the ability to lead a variety of ensembles, from classical to Caribbean styles.
- The "All-Rounder": An individual who thrives on diversity and possesses the intellectual flexibility to teach across different departments in their secondary subject area.
- CAIE Experience: Familiarity with the Cambridge International (IGCSE) framework is preferred but not essential; we prioritize passion, leadership, and professional adaptability above all.
Why Join BWIC?
- Specialized Facilities: Benefit from a dedicated music suite, performance venues, and an environment that values the arts as a fundamental aspect of academic growth.
- Small Class Sizes: Enjoy intimate, focused classes that allow for personalized instruction, in-depth musical exploration, and meaningful practical experiences.
- A Lifestyle Unmatched: Experience life and work on "Provo," where your professional role coexists with stunning beaches and a supportive, international faculty community.
