About This Role:

York House School is inviting applications for the role of Junior School Counsellor from compassionate, enthusiastic, and dynamic candidates who are committed to delivering an exceptional 21st-century learning experience for our students. The ideal applicant will possess a caring and articulate demeanor, communicate effectively, and show genuine concern for counseling children in Grades 1-7. This position emphasizes supporting the social and emotional development of our students and provides opportunities to engage in co-curricular activities that enhance their overall school experience.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred: British Columbia Teachers' certification or an equivalent
  • Teaching experience is an asset
  • Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology, School Counselling, Social Work (MSW), or an M.Ed. in Counselling Psychology
  • Prior counseling experience at the Junior School level is desirable
  • Experience in an independent school environment is beneficial
  • Involvement in co-curricular activities is a plus

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Work collaboratively with school leadership, teachers, and parents regarding the emotional and social well-being of students
  • Provide direct counseling services to children and their families
  • Consult with faculty and parents
  • Facilitate workshops for teachers and parents focusing on social and emotional learning, student mental health, and relationship skills
  • Participate in school-based team meetings
  • Provide direct instruction to students on topics such as peer support, conflict resolution, social skills, and life skills
  • Assist colleagues in teaching Health and Career Education and advocate for healthy school environments
  • Serve as a liaison with community organizations and allied professionals
  • Adhere to the ethical standards of the counseling profession, ensuring compliance with relevant federal, provincial, and local laws, statutes, and policies related to students and families, including child protection, inclusion education, attendance, educational rights, and privacy
  • Familiarity with Ministry Coding pertaining to behavioral designations and funding
  • Knowledgeable about counseling strategies for children, parents, and teachers regarding ASD, ADHD, and other exceptionalities
  • Awareness of current research concerning girls and learning
  • Demonstrated experience as an enthusiastic, innovative, and caring educator committed to diversity and inclusion in all its forms
  • Collaborative, adaptable, supportive, and an effective team player

Compensation

£30,000 - £45,000+ (Regional Equivalent)
